Friends of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated West Sister Island Sunset Cruise, a unique fundraising event to take place on Thursday, August 15, 2024 (6:30-9pm), designed to bring together nature enthusiasts and conservation supporters for an unforgettable evening amidst the serene beauty of Lake Erie.
Launching from Port Clinton, guests aboard the Jet Express charter will have the opportunity to see one of Lake Erie's most significant bird sanctuaries: West Sister Island National Wildlife Refuge. This 82-acre island is closed to all access to protect the largest nesting colony of wading birds in the U.S. Great Lakes. Tall hackberry trees provide nesting sites for great blue herons, great egrets, black-crowned night-herons, double-crested cormorants and more. This enchanting evening on the water not only promises breathtaking views of the island but also supports a great cause. All proceeds from the event will directly benefit Friends of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, a 501(c)3 nonprofit established in 1997 that supports the conservation mission Ohio’s only national wildlife refuge complex by restoring land, engaging the community and enhancing public access.
Guests will enjoy hors-oeuvres and commentary from local experts including Master Bird Bander Tom Bartlett, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Manager Jason Lewis, and Ohio Department of Natural Resources biologist Dave Sherman, making this a must-attend event for nature lovers and those looking to support environmental conservation efforts in a meaningful way. Additionally, several raffles including a 50/50 will be held on board.
"We are proud to host this fun experience that not only delights and educates but also contributes significantly to the refuge's conservation efforts. We invite everyone to join us for this enjoyable evening on the water,” said Aimee Arent, Friends Executive Director.
