Chair's Message
I would like to take a moment to acknowledge what is happening in the Middle East and to emphasize that if you need to talk, our department is here to support all people. The University of Ottawa's President, Jacques Frémont, released a Message on the conflict in the Middle East on October 10th, which includes links to services and supports offered to our community during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with all those impacted.
In honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, our department, in partnership with the University of Ottawa’s Mashkawazìwogamig Indigenous Resource Centre (IRC), hosted a Learning Circle on Monday, September 25, 2023. We were honoured by the presence of Claudette Commanda, Chancellor of the University of Ottawa, who led the day’s event in the company of Indigenous uOttawa medical students and members of the IRC. Co-leading the event were several key members of our faculty, including Dr. Darlene Kitty, Director of uOttawa’s Indigenous Program and Assistant Professor with the DFM, and Dr. Sarah Funnell, Founding Director of uOttawa’s Centre of Indigenous Health Research and Education and Associate Dean and Chair, Indigenous Health at Queen’s University.

Faculty and staff participated in Learning Circles led by Indigenous University of Ottawa students, where they shared the impact of the immersive cinematic experience, "This Is Not a Ceremony," by Niitsitapi writer and director Ahnahktsipiitaa (Colin Van Loon). In reaffirmation of the film’s call to action, participants wrote their reflections for change on orange shirt-shaped paper cut outs, which were posted and displayed on a pillar within the room. | |

The day concluded with a faculty development session, facilitated by Dr. Sarah Funnell and Dr. Darlene Kitty, on case-based approaches to support Indigenous patients and applying the CanMEDS-FM Indigenous supplement in medical practice, a further call to action for us, as family physicians, to recognize and respect the values and experiences of Indigenous patients in our practices. This was the first of its kind event at our department and participants requested that we continue to find ways to have these important conversations. For more information about this event, please read the September 26th Faculty of Medicine article, "Family Medicine’s first-of-its-kind learning circle features VR film ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation."
We are excited to announce the launch of our rejuvenated Family Medicine Scholarship Fund. Please visit our website to review the eligibility requirements and learn more about the 7 funding opportunities and important deadlines.
I would like to highlight a current leadership opportunity for our Enhanced Skills Global Health Program Director. I invite you to review the full job description and information on how to apply.
Lastly, the countdown is on! This is a final reminder to our faculty about the upcoming Annual Faculty Retreat, which is just over one week away. We anticipate a great event and look forward to seeing you there!
