PARSHAT BAMIDBAR

Rabbi JJ Polter

When we take a look at the Holidays during the year, Shavuot seems like the odd one out as it pertains to specific laws and preparation. For Pesach we clean our homes in some cases months before Pesach, and are busy with all the cooking/ lack of Chometz and Matzah for the Holiday. On Sukkot we are busy building a Sukkah, buying our Lulav and Etrog as well as getting flags and small Torahs for the last days of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. Even on Holidays like Chanukah and Purim which are Rabbinical Holidays we spend time acquiring oil and candles, making Latkes, and buying gifts for Chanukah, and before Purim we spend days buying and packing Shalach Manot, getting ready for Megillah and preparation for all the other Mitzvot as well. For Shavuot, other than cheese treats, (which makes cooking simpler) there is not much preparation for the Holiday,

MAKING ICE CREAM FOR SHAVUOT

Last Friday, N4A made ice cream. They put heavy cream, vanilla, and maple syrup in a tin can. They put the tin can in a bowl surrounded by ice that we covered in salt. The salt made the ice even colder than it already was, and it helped the liquid freeze into a solid - yummy ice-cream!! They stirred the mixture every five minutes for an hour and 15 minutes until it was frozen. It was worth all the hard work. They enjoyed eating our ice cream! Shavuot experiments are so much fun!

5TH GRADE PBL

On Monday, as part of their Project Based Learning, 5th graders took a field trip to two JARC homes. The students performed a mitzvah by weeding, planting flowers and mulching flower beds to help beautify the homes of the People Served by JARC. The students also made windchimes which will be distributed to all of the different homes.

Thank you Mrs. Howes, Rabbi Strosberg and Ms. T and our chaperones Jenny Schwartz, Sarah Prostak and Nicole… what a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

6TH GRADE FLOATING PROJECTS

In Mrs. L-F's 6th grade Social Studies class, the students created miniature parade floats that represented their chosen regions. Students used materials/resources (or copies of them) from their regions to decorate their floats. They included items that reflected various aspects of the region such as landforms, industries, resources, attractions, monuments/ historical markers, flora and fauna.
