PARSHAT MISHPATIM

Rabbi JJ Polter

 במרצע"

“He shall bring him to the door or to the door post, and his master shall bore his ear with an awl.” (21:6)

QUESTION: Why was the ear of the slave pierced near the door or the door post?

ANSWER: After a slave works for six years, the “doors are opened” to him and he can go out free. When a slave does not use the “open door,” he is put up against the door to have his ear pierced.

On the door post, there is a mezuzah, in which it is written, “You shall love your G‑d.” Since the slave, instead of saying “I love my G‑d who took me out of Egypt and made me free,” is saying, “I love my master and want to remain his slave,” his ear is pierced near the mezuzah.

SPECIAL FRIENDS DAY

More details and pictures next week, but for now we want to thank our amazing ECC Team led by Mrs. Ellen Berlin for a wonderful morning with Special Friends.

Artboard 9 copy 2.png

SCIENTISTS

This week, our N4 Scientists did a science experiment! They learned all about whether liquids “become friends” or not(the beginnings of chemical reactions!) by creating a snowstorm in a bottle! The students took turns adding either oil, glitter glue, water, and alkaline seltzer tablets. They were so excited to watch what would happen!! Thank you Morah Helene, Morah Pia and Mrs. Prawer!!

HEBREW BOOK REPORTS

Our 2nd graders in Morah Rikki’s class read books on different kinds of trees and wrote book reports on those trees! עץ הזיתים, עץ תפוזים, עץ דודדבן. The students then read their book reports to each other. They were so proud of their efforts.

CLASSIFYING MINERALS

The 6th graders in Mr. Wolowiec's 6th grade science class classified minerals by luster, whether it is metallic or non-metallic, hardness, cleavage, streak, or whether it has special properties.

CHEMISTRY

Students in Mr. Barnes’ 9th grade Chemistry class, learned about the collision theory of chemical reactions and the effect of temperature on the reaction rate as they chemically reacted an acid with a base at different temperatures. This lab also reinforced skills they have been previously working on including taking careful measurements, analysis of the accuracy and precision of their data, and the ability to both take and express measurements in proper significant figures. Thank you Mr. Barnes!!

Let's go Farber Fire!!
