NOTICE: Certification Documents Open for Review Until June 19
As many of you know, NFRC is working towards accreditation of the Product Certification Program. Although work has been ongoing on various fronts, the documents used for the certification scheme are vital in defining the process of achieving and maintaining certification of products and product lines, as well as NFRC control and use of certification marks and labeling. The documents have had input from many stakeholders, including manufacturers, inspection agencies, and simulation and test lab representatives, among others, and have all been reviewed by a workgroup assembled by the NFRC Board of Directors.
The documents in this first round of public comment set the foundation for the overall program, as well as a few of the product categories that NFRC certifies. In addition, it puts in writing many of the current practices, better defines some certification activities, and reinforces some rules that will help us get through the process of accreditation.
The public comment period will last until June 19, 2023. At the end of the review period, all comments will be compiled by staff and reviewed based on the requirements of the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17065. Similar comments will be grouped together, and staff will work with the Board of Directors Workgroup to determine responses and what adjustments may be needed before we formally apply for accreditation.
These documents can be found HERE. Please reach out to NFRC Director or Accreditation and Quality, Ron Reed with any questions.

NFRC’s Standards Committee – Public Comment Period Begins and Volunteer Needed
Several NFRC documents will be in public review from May 5 through June 19, 2023, in pursuit of ANSI approval of the documents. A bulletin with links to the documents will go out on May 5.
As an American National Standard Institute (ANSI) Accredited Standards Developer, NFRC’s Standards Committee oversees the review and approval of NFRC’s national standards in accordance with ANSI’s Essential Requirements. This consensus body strives to maintain a balance of members that represent all stakeholders affected by these standards and, as such, needs committee members representing the “User” category, which includes:
- Consumers and consumer advocacy organizations
- Utilities and other energy service providers
- Architects, specifiers, and design professionals
- Builders and other construction contractors
- Similar parties with interest in fenestration issues
Anyone interested in joining this committee may go to the group’s webpage for more information, access to the committee application, conflict of interest declaration, and basic responsibilities. Applications are requested by June 19, 2023.

Technical Interpretations Policy Committee Has Opening for a Volunteer
The Technical Interpretations Policy Committee (TIPC) will have an open committee spot beginning in June, and a volunteer is needed. The qualified candidate will work primarily with a residential fenestration product manufacturer that is also an NFRC member company. An NFRC certified simulator or LEAFF certified simulator is preferred, but a thorough understanding of the end of NFRC simulation methods will be accepted. For more information or to volunteer, please contact TIPC staff liaison Dennis Anderson or TIPC Chair Tom Culp.

NFRC Connects with European Window Manufacturers | |
|
Representatives from the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) attended the BAU trade show in Munich, Germany, April 17-21, and returned with substantial insight into the European fenestration market.
Most notably, NFRC found there is widespread use of first-party ratings but significant interest in the potential value of third-party certification for European consumers.
NFRC connected with more than a dozen European manufacturers during the event, and staff are proactively following up with them to determine next steps.
NFRC will continue to explore prospective opportunities in the international market.
Please contact NFRC’s Senior Program Manager of Operations, Dennis Anderson, or Senior Director of Market Transformation, Tom Herron, if you would like to know more.

Window Terminology and Components May Vary
The technologies that make windows efficient go beyond just the glass panes – they are found in the frames and inside them as well, including the internal spacers that hold the glass in place. NFRC’s ratings system evaluates all these parts of a window to establish its energy-efficiency ratings.
