CMCBD Golden Brick Award Goes To Gianluca Legrottaglie
Each year the CMCBD honors
members of the community with a prestigious Golden Brick Award for their contributions to the District.
The 2016 recipient was none other than the charismatic Gianluca Legrottaglie.
Gianluca operates two successful small businesses serving our District:
54 Mint
and
Montesacro
. Both restaurants were started from scratch in completely raw spaces, and in incredibly challenging locations. They are now both thriving destinations that have, with Gianluca's stewardship: activated, beautified, created jobs and brought new visitors and vibrancy to the area. Both businesses have also become a sought after source of sustenance, supporting our area's many theater patrons in need of pre or post show dining options. We also thank Gianluca for his fundraising and philanthropic efforts (locally and abroad); and for his tireless efforts to support CBD goals through advocacy and community organizing. The 2016 Golden Brick Award was presented to Gianluca (pictured left) by the

at this year's CBD Holiday Party.

Safety Project
In September, SFMTA held an Open House Community Information Session for the 7th and 8th Street Safety Project at the Bayanihan Community Center (1010 Mission Street). According to the project p
age

he main goal of the 7th and 8th Streets Safety Project is to improve safety and comfort for all modes of travel along 7th and 8th between Market Street and Folsom Street. In Quarter 4, SFMTA approved a set of safety improvements including protected bike lanes and Muni boarding platforms. Construction is set to begin this winter and continue through May 2017. Muni Escalators, Elevator Upgrades Continue In Quarter 4
with plans to update 17 escalators in the Muni Metro system, including Powell and Civic Center
stations. The plan also calls for
updating 11 elevators
in the Muni Subway system, m
odernizing outdated equipment to improve safety and reliability. The entire system overhaul will take place over four years, with work staggered so as to minimize impact on the commuters. SFMTA
released a video
detailing the importance of reliable elevator and escalator service. Also during Quarter 4, the Grove Street escalator, maintained by BART, was shut down for major repairs. In a statement, BART asked riders to use alternate entrances at the Orpheum Theater and Hotel Whitcomb

, the escalator is expected to be up and running in February 2017.

It was a busy Quarter 4 for transportation, with continued implementation of the Safer Market Street Plan in the District, as well as raised bike lanes.

New Art Along Market Street
As part of CMCBD's
Be Barrier Beautiful project, a graffiti riddled wall between 1028 Market and 1066 Market Street is now home to new work by artist
Erik Otto. The artwork was brought to the site by the CMCBD and site owner Shorenstein Properties. About

Barricade Art At 1075 Market Street
Formerly home to the infamous Marke
t
Street Cinema, those walking along Market Street or Stevenson Alley have likely noticed work is
under way with the absence of the former marquis.
Build Group, the contractors on the project, have been inspired by CMCBD's Be Barrier Beautiful to commission artwork on either side of their barricade facing Market Street. The work was done by artists who held exhibitions at District gallery 1AM.
950-974 Market Street
While several developments along the north side of Market Street between 5th and 7th Streets have seen delays from original projections for a variety factors, it appears the large hotel and residential project from
Group i spanning 950-974 Market Street
is closer to reality. After a discredited report of historic underground tunnels circulated the media, the project went before the Planning Commission where an appeal was denied, paving the way for next steps in the approval process. In October, SF Gate reported on the developer's purchase of a nearby parcel for affordable housing. Beyond Chron called the project a major victory in the way of jobs and
housing
. The project will likely face another appeal and go before the full Board of Supervisors. A date has not yet been set.
Trinity Place Among 50 Biggest SF Projects
300 5th Street
Stanton Architecture firm has proposed plans for a new hotel and residential builiding at 300 5th Street, just at the edge of the District. The proposal calls for a seven-story hotel 120 rooms and an 8th floor featuring five residential units, according to
SF Business Times.
Report: SF Office Leasing Shows Little, No Slowdown
Just as Quarter 4 began, media outlets picked up on a quarterly report published by global real estate firm, Cushman & Wakefield. According to the San Francisco Office Snapshot, which you can download here, data shows leases for office space show no signs of slowing down, putting to ease, according to reports, any concern for a 'tech bubble burst'. SF Business Times has more on the report and what it may mean for San Francisco.
1036 Mission
Progress continues at 1036 Mission Street. Acquired by the nonprofit affordable housing developer, Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (
TNDC) in 2007, the project will consist of 83 affordable residential units and a ground floor retail space. More than half of the units will be two and three-bedroom. Forty units will be made available for homeless or at-risk families through the City's subsidy program. Learn more about the project

 Old Mint Recipient of $1M Grant For Renovation
In November, Mayor Edwin Lee,
along with
California Historical Society
Executive Director and CEO Anthea Hartig, State Senator Mark Leno, San Francisco Assemblymember Phil Ting, and Mike Sangiacomo, California Historical Society president and CEO of Recology announced the latest development in the future of the Old Mint. As the SF Business Times reported, the Old Mint received a $1 million grant for restoration and development plans for the site, which will become the headquarters for the California Historical Society (CHS) upon completion in 2018. Market Street Prototyping Festival
For the second year, the
Market Street Prototyping Festival brought unique interactive "prototypes" to Market Street from the Embarcadero to 7th Street. The event drew media attention as well as thousands of visitors to the District. Drawing on imagination and innovation, teams created playful structures, artwork, instruments and even a pop-up forest among the 40 prototypes. Throughoutt the three-day festival, curators like LINES Dance Center (pictured right) brought vibrant physical programming to enliven the event. Proposed Navigation Center Community Discussion
In Quarter 4, CMCBD invited staff from San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Su
pportive Housing (
HSH
) to share and discuss with stakeholders the preliminary plans being formulated with Salvation Army to bring a Homeless Navigation Center to 520 Jessie Street in the District. The meeting, hel

. Taking into account the concerns raised by stakeholders as well as years of experience in working to maintain an
d improve the District, CMCBD has compiled a list of suggested directives for the design and operations of the project, including 24/7 staffing, 24/7 interior and exterior security personnel, exterior lighting, high resolution security cameras, and more. Market Street Snowflakes
Central Market CBD was once again a proud sponsor of Market Street Association's annual Market Street Snowflakes. Every year, 298 snowflakes light up market Street throughout the District, bringing holiday cheer and vibrancy along San Francisco's Market Street. During the official lighting ceremony, emceed by Spencer Christian of ABC channel 7 news, participants from Westfield SF Centre, Ross Dress for Less, SF Public Utilities Commission, SF Public Works, SF Ballet, Dickens Faire Characters and Market Street Association were treated to live music by the Clint Baker Trio. Leading the crowd in the countdown was California State Assembly Member David Chiu.
