Central-Denison Newsletter

Note from the Principal

Happy May!

With just a few short weeks left in the school year, we are working very hard to get in every last bit of learning before we move on to summer and the next school year. Every year, we face a new set of challenges. Teachers and students alike, are proud to celebrate our growth and success!

As we prepare for the end of the school year, we would like to take this opportunity to share some tidbits of information and upcoming dates. During the week of May 6th through the 10th, we celebrate Staff Appreciation Week. Central-Denison is

blessed to have an amazing staff who go above and beyond every day. Please take a minute to let your child’s teacher know how much you appreciate the time they have dedicated to his/her success. Let’s not forget our fantastic support staff! These ladies spend their days working closely with your children, helping them navigate all aspects of their day.

On May 8th, our 2nd and 3rd graders will be performing at their spring concert. This performance will be at Badger High School in the main gym. It will begin at 6:30 pm. They have been practicing very hard and I can guarantee that you are going to love this performance!

Lake Geneva Schools is offering a new summer program for children in 5K through 5th grade. It is called Kids’ Academy and will incorporate some fun enrichment activities with some focus on academics as well. It will be offered in two sessions, June 17th through June 28th and July 8th through July 19th . Classes will be at Central-Denison and will run from 8:00am to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. Free lunch and breakfast will be provided as well as bussing from some key central locations. There is a small $50 fee

for each session. Please feel free to email questions to kidsacademy@badger.k12.wi.us or call Central-Denison directly (262)348-4000.

In addition to this program, we are welcoming our incoming 4K students with our 4K Jumpstart. It will be a two-week program from July 8th through July 19th. It is also a fun program that offers our 4Kers the opportunity to get acclimated to the school environment. The fee for this two-week program is $50 and bussing is available. You MUST BE REGISTERED at Central-Denison or Star Center to participate.

Our PTO is sponsoring a COLOR RUN activity on Thursday, May 16th . The afterschool fun will begin at 5:00. Please watch for more details about this very colorful event!

Our End of the Year Celebration will be on Wednesday, June 5th . This year, we will include a “Touch A Vehicle” component along with our usual relays and outside fun. We are always looking for volunteers to help with this fun-filled, memorable day. If you are interested, please reach out to your child’s teacher or contact the CenDen office.

Finally, our 4K Fly-up will be on June 6th . This is our end of the year program that celebrates the growth that our 4Kers have made throughout the year. Details will be shared as the date draws near.

It is important to remember that some of the most valuable learning that takes place in our school is not about academics. Our children are exposed to social experiences and character building opportunities throughout their day, every day. Showing good character and making good choices will help our children become the leaders and role models of the future. We are so proud of them and feel blessed to be a part of the Central-Denison Family. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Winter Reminders

Student Information Form - Due May 10th

Important Information about Pick Ups

IMPORTANT: Please remember to write on your child's communication card how they are getting home each day.

Dear CenDen Families:

Anticipating more snowfall, I wanted to share a few VERY IMPORTANT reminders with you about our pick-up and drop-off procedures. The normal procedures are included in the handout below for your review, but I would like to share some additional helpful hints that make a big difference, especially with the addition of snow.

  • Please approach the lines with caution. With the addition of snow piles and slippery roadways, the street narrows down a bit making it more difficult to see clearly and maneuver around safely.
  • Have your children get in and out of the car on the passenger side of the vehicle. This keeps them safely on the sidewalk with no risk of getting pinched between two vehicles or getting hit by a car out in the roadway.
  • PATIENCE…Honking, yelling, or swearing at people does not make the line move faster and only adds to the frustration for everyone.
  • If you don’t like to wait in line, consider coming a bit later. Five minutes makes quite a bit of difference. School starts at 8:45 and dismissal is at 3:45. If you come too early, you will need to wait in line longer.
  • If you are picking up or dropping off at Cook Street, enter the line from NORTH STREET Do not try to cut into the line at Dodge Street. Others have been waiting in line and do not appreciate your cutting into the line ahead of them.
  • Also, if dropping off on Cook Street, please DO NOT turn into the back alley driveway and drop your child off. It blocks the sidewalk and causes unsafe conditions for those families who are walking their children to the door and need to cross the driveway areas. It might seem more convenient for you, but it is not safe for others.
  • DO NOT park in the alley while waiting for your child. The alley behind Central-Denison is a public thoroughfare.
  • If you are picking up or dropping off on Madison Street, please approach the line from the south (closest to the lake). Madison Street is quite narrow and it is not safe to drop your child off on the west side of the road and ask them to cross.
  • Use the crosswalks! – Set an example for our students and be safe, even if it is a few steps out of the way.

We work very hard to make our pick-up and drop-off areas safe for everyone, whether you are a child getting into or out of a car, or a parent trying to pick up or drop off your child. It is not our intention to cause anyone undue stress, that is why we have the plans in place that we do. We know that it is not ideal, but it works…when we work together. If the pick-up and drop-off lines don’t work for your family’s needs, please remember, the bus is always an option or you can contact the office for alternative ideas.

Thank you for your help in keeping our school safe.

Student Attendance and Attendance Procedures
One of the biggest ways you can help your child succeed this school year is to make sure your child gets to school, on time, each and every day. The evidence is clear: children with good attendance are more likely to be successful in school. High attendance rates are linked to high student achievement. Every day counts, and missing school even 10% of the time has a significant negative impact on reading and math achievement as children progress through school. We want to ask for your commitment to making sure your child attends school every day possible this year.

When your child does have to be absent from school, we ask that you communicate with us about the absence. When your child will be absent, you have two communication options:

Call Mrs. Draper in the main office at 262-348-4000 to speak with her and/or leave a message by 9:30 AM each day.

You may login to Powerschool to record the reason for your child’s absence. Please see the directions linked here.

We also ask that you let us know about pre-planned absences, including vacations and doctor appointments, ahead of time. When missing school for an appointment, it is always encouraged that you get documentation of your visit to provide to the school as verification. When leaving for an extended vacation, we also ask that you complete the Planned Absence Request form. This form can be obtained from Mrs. Draper in the office.

Lastly, please also note, as a school, we are required to track student attendance and support families with any attendance issues or concerns. Our highest priority is to have students at school, and we are willing to help in any way we can. As a parent, it is important to understand the current State of Wisconsin attendance laws stated below:

A parent or guardian may only excuse their child/children 10 days during the school year including doctor visits. After these 10 days, an absence can only be excused if the school is provided with a note from a doctor, dentist, court, etc. The same guidelines apply for excessive tardies.

Once a student has been absent for 10 days (excused or unexcused), parents/guardians will receive a letter, noting the absences as well as procedures for next steps to improve attendance

Thank you in advance for your commitment and support to your child’s attendance this school year.

When to Keep Your Child Home from School
School attendance is very important, and we encourage families to make sure their children are in school as much as possible. However, children who are sick need to stay home for their well-being and to prevent others from becoming sick.
