Dr. Nikki Hill, Associate Professor, and her team recently completed a 5-year study funded by the National Institute on Aging investigating risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease. The project examined cognitive trajectories in multiple longitudinal datasets that included over 40,000 participants across periods of up to 20 years to characterize subgroups of older adults at the highest risk for Alzheimer’s disease based on early symptoms. Among their key findings were that older adults’ perceptions of their memory | |

performance influenced several potentially modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline. Specifically, in older adults with no evidence of cognitive impairment, reports of perceived memory decline consistently predicted future depressive and anxiety symptoms as well as lower leisure activity participation. Furthermore, they found that feelings of depression (e.g., sadness, hopelessness) that accompanied perceived memory problems negatively influenced cognition over time. Therefore, older adults whose mood is influenced by concerns about their memory may be important to target with early interventions to improve psychological and cognitive health, thereby reducing risk for cognitive decline. More broadly, Dr. Hill’s research aims to identify older adults at risk for cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease, tailor intervention strategies based on individual characteristics, and develop therapeutic approaches to promote cognitive health. In her most current work, she is exploring how stigmatized beliefs about aging and dementia may influence older adults’ perceptions of their memory as well as their reports of cognitive problems to healthcare providers. | |
7th Annual Translating Research to Innovations in Practice Symposium | |

Registration is open NOW for this annual symposium, which provides an opportunity for nurses and health care professionals to network with peers and colleagues and to discuss evidence around practice concerns and solutions.
The symposium will take place beginning on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. (reception and poster session) and Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (conference sessions) at The Hershey Lodge and Convention Center in Hershey, PA. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Lodge.
