We are pleased to announce the launch of the new video-blog series: “ENERGY with David Hamilton”. Each 10 to 15 minute episode, produced in conjunction with Stony Brook University’s Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), takes a deep dive into energy and entrepreneurship, with key contributors from the SBU and Long Island economic-development ecosystems joining Hamilton – the AERTC’s COO and CEBIP's Executive Director – for engaging, informative and often personal discussions. Topics covered included R&D, commercialization, customer discovery and business-building topics critical to early-stage energy enterprises. The first eight episodes of “ENERGY with David Hamilton” are streaming now on YouTube.

POWER PLAYERS - Our Partners

The Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) was established in 1994 by the State of New York to utilize the extensive engineering resources of the SUNY system to help statewide industries compete more effectively. SPIR fills a critical gap in existing state industrial-assistance programs by providing technically advanced, multi-disciplinary assistance on a fast-turnaround basis.

The intent is to help companies improve their market posture, retain existing employees and create new jobs. Over the past 25 years, Stony Brook’s SPIR program has worked with more than 500 New York companies on more than 3,400 projects. Our industry partners estimate the program’s advanced technical assistance has led to the creation and/or retention of more than 15,300 jobs.

Highlights of our successes this year include technical support on SBIR/STTR funding proposals, active participation in the licensing and commercialization of products, support for incubator companies and assistance in providing high-quality technical jobs for our graduates. The success of SPIR underscores the maturity and depth of commitment to the university-industry partnerships that have developed as a result of the program.

James T. Gallagher

Former Executive Director, NYS Smart Grid Consortium

James Gallagher brought more than 40 years of energy policy and industry experience to his role as Executive Director of the New York State Smart Grid Consortium, which extended from April 2013 until the Consortium’s dissolution in June 2019.

As Executive Director, he oversaw the statewide implementation of a safe, secure, and reliable “smart grid,” and most recently led the consortium’s efforts to assist Puerto Rico in developing a long-term grid roadmap following the devastation of Hurricane Maria. He also served as the co-leader of the Market Design and Platform Technology Working Group for the New York State Public Service Commission’s (PSC) Reforming the Energy Vision Proceeding.

Prior to joining the Smart Grid Consortium, Gallagher served as Manager of Strategic Planning at New York Independent System Operator Inc., and as Director of Energy Policy for the City of New York under Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He also served as Director of the Office of Electricity and Environment for the PSC, where he enjoyed a 21-year career.

In the late 1970s, he managed the Tennessee Valley Authority’s pioneering Solar Homes for the Valley Project, that involved the construction of 44 demonstration passive solar homes throughout the Tennessee Valley region.

Gallagher earned a bachelor’s degree in Business and Economics from Lehigh University and a master’s degree in Energy Management and Policy from the University of Pennsylvania.
