Our Graduate Highlights

Karen P. Wilson - UW Law School

Growing the thin figure of 2% of representation in the field

Dear reader,

This past May I graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School and was sworn in to practice law in the state of Wisconsin. As a first-generation, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to obtain my juris doctor, but after twelve years of study and the wavering support of my community, I have accomplished my goal of becoming the first attorney in my family.

Presenting Karen Pérez Wilson,

Juris Doctor at her commencement

My graduation from law school was significant because it represented the breaking of a generational cycle and the achievement of a dream that as an undocumented student, I was told would be impossible to accomplish. This achievement was made possible by the generosity of Centro and all those who invested in my future. With their support, I was able to change my life and the course of my family's future.

As a new graduate, I will begin my legal career working in Madison, WI as an immigration attorney. I am thrilled to give back to my immigrant community and the place I have called home for the last 27 years. I am grateful and humbled to be joining the 2% of Latina attorneys and am eager to begin my practice.

Escalera Graduation

With over 50 attendees among families and friends, Escalera students of Vel Phillips Memorial High School celebrated the end of one more cohort in the community with a wholesome lunch with their awesome coordinator, Angélica Catalán.

Filled with joy and with their diplomas acknowledging their efforts, Escalera students are ready for the summer to come and enjoy it with friends.

Garage Sale

Saying farewell to a much-loved space or item is an emotional rollercoaster. But what makes the process happier is when we witness these items will have a second chance and further purpose at the homes of community members.

On June 7th and 8th, we had our garage sale at our former space on Badger Rd and it was a success! Lots of families will now literally have a small piece of Centro in their homes.
