Support Acts 4 Ministry’s 20th Annual Back to School Drive!

While summer is heating up, Acts 4 Ministry is preparing for the new school year to ensure that children in need have the necessary tools and clothing to start their school year with confidence!

Now through 9/13, Acts 4 is accepting school uniforms and supplies for children of all ages to be given free or at low cost to children throughout the Greater Waterbury area during the annual Back to School “Swap and Shop” event.

July 15-19: Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Accelerator Virtual Program

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs offer grant funding to eligible companies to help them conduct research & develop and work to commercialize their innovations. The Phase I award ($50k - $250k), and the Phase II award (up to $1 million) are non-dilutive grants offered through a competitive application process.


In this interactive 6-week virtual program, industry experts will provide hands-on assistance to help your company prepare for a SBIR/STTR grant application. You will learn:

  • What Federal Agencies seek in the SBIR/STTR program and address the complexities of the application process.
  • How to conduct research and test your business concept. Identify key risk factors and best practices.
  • How to define your technological innovation and understand Federal Agency objectives.
  • The essentials of commercialization.
  • How to pitch your proposal and get feedback from an experienced team of business advisors.


Eligibility:

  • A for-profit small business (< 500 employees) located in Connecticut.
  • Majority owned by a US citizen or permanent resident.
  • Minority-owned businesses are encouraged to apply.

August 15: Quilts that Care, Inc. Bingo Fundraiser; Upcoming Meetings

WATERBURY ‑ A Bingo fundraiser, to benefit Quilts that Care, Inc., will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 at Raymour & Flanigan, 410 Reidville Drive.


Quilts that Care, Inc., a nonprofit organization, makes and donates quilts to cancer patients at 20 Connecticut facilities. 


The Quilts that Care mission is to “wrap cancer patients and their families in comfort and hope, one quilt at a time.”


The cost to play Bingo is $10 for three Bingo cards. The event will include refreshments and prizes. For information, call 203-573-1015.

Quilts that Care will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays, July 2 and 16; from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays, July 11, 18 and 25 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, July 6, 13, 20 and 27 at Quilts that Care headquarters, 130 Scott Road, Waterbury.


The group will also meet from 12:30 to 2 p.m. July 3 and 17 at the Litchfield Community Center, Route 202. Litchfield

 

Quilts that Care, Inc., a nonprofit organization, makes and donates quilts to cancer patients at 20 Connecticut facilities. Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome. Non-sewers are welcome. Volunteers to assist with fundraising, grant writing and corporate sponsorships are also welcome. Fabric, sewing notion and monetary donations are also welcome.


The facilities are The Cancer Care Center at Griffin Hospital, Derby; The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center, Dr. Nicole Sookhan of Trinity Health of New England and Saint Mary’s VITAS in Waterbury; Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Torrington; Connecticut Childrens’ Medical Center and St Francis Hospital in Hartford. Also, Norwalk Hospital; The Yale/Smilow Cancer Center in New Haven; Bristol Hospital; The Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute at The Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain; Hartford HealthCare at Home, Watertown and Southington; Visiting Nurse & Hospice of Litchfield County, Winsted; AccentCare, Middlebury; Midstate Medical Center, Meriden; University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington and Veteran’s Hospital, Newington. QTC recently began to donate to the Diebold Family Cancer Center in New Milford and to Danbury Hospital, making for a total of 20 Connecticut facilities.

August 22: Summer's Comedy Night at the Palace Theater

This summer’s open mic evening is dedicated to comedy! The Palace Theater wants to shine the Spotlight on regional comedians. Hosted by Connecticut’s own Summer Orlando, the event takes place on August 22nd from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Whether they are seasoned stand-up com


ics, newcomers to the scene, or a comedy sketch group, performers are invited to show off their comedy chops in the intimate Poli Club! This event is part of the Palace Theater’s CommUNITY Spotlight Series, which is funded by the Connecticut Community Foundation, and Mary Ellen & Tim Rourke.

 

“Our goal is to foster creativity and build an inclusive space that offers participants an opportunity to try out new material in an encouraging setting,” says Sheree Marcucci, Director of Special Projects & Curated Events for the Palace Theater. “It is a fun way to bring the community together and give a last hurrah for summer!”

 

Looking for a space to showcase your work? Participants 18+ are welcome. All performances should be appropriate for a PG13 audience. Each performer should be prepared to present one 5-7-minute-long set. There is no cost for performing, but registration is required. Comedy sketches are limited to four performers. IT Update from Golden Technology Services, Inc.: Small to Medium Sized Businesses (SMBs)

According to the US Chamber of Commerce there are 33.2 million small to medium sized businesses in the United States. Meaning companies that have 500 or less employees which account for 99.9% of all U.S. firms.


Forbes Magazine reports that SMBs employ 61.2 million people and represents 45.9% of the entire workforce.


The Cyber Readiness Institute (https://cyberreadinessinstitute.org) polled a cross selection of its members and found that only one in five rates SMB cyber capabilities as “effective” or “somewhat effective.”
