April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month - A Time to Celebrate You!

Dear Big Brothers Big Sisters,

As spring blooms, we reflect on the growth and warmth brought into our lives by those who give selflessly. April, designated as National Volunteer Appreciation Month, is a special time at Big Brothers Big Sisters as we celebrate the incredible impact of our volunteers in our local community and beyond.

A Look Back at the Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast

On the beautiful morning of April 18th, our community came together at Maple Springs United Methodist Church to honor our dedicated volunteers. It was a morning filled with joy, recognition, and heartfelt stories.

Highlights from the Event:

  • Jennifer Kerrigan, our esteemed Immediate Past Board Chair, opened the event by acknowledging everyone who has contributed their time and energy. Your applause filled the room as volunteers from various programs stood to be recognized—thank you for making a difference!
  • Mayor Allen Joines and Superintendent Tricia McManus shared inspiring words on the power of community and education. Their messages reminded us of the significant role each mentor plays in shaping the future of our youth.
  • Awards and Recognitions: The spotlight shone bright on Alex Newman, our Local Big Brother of the Year 2024, and Donna Roberson, honored both as Local and North Carolina Big Sister of the Year 2024. Their stories of commitment and transformation are a beacon of hope and motivation for us all.

Alex's Story: From his first meeting with his Little Brother, Jerrian, Alex has nurtured a friendship that embodies the spirit of giving and growth over the last SIX years. Their journey from initial shyness to a strong, supportive bond truly captures the essence of our mission.

Donna's Story: Donna and her Little Sister, Melvina, have shared a journey of mutual growth and deep connection since 2021. Donna's dedication to "sharing and caring" has not only transformed Melvina's life but also enriched her own in countless ways. Melvina is headed to college in the fall and was accepted into six different schools!

Mentoring in Action: Group Mentoring at Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools

This month, we also want to spotlight our group mentoring initiatives. Through these sessions, mentors provide guidance and support to multiple young individuals, empowering them to achieve their best both academically and personally. The stories of change and success emanating from these groups inspire us every day.
