Celebrating Our Vibrant Asian-American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Heritage

This month, Cohen Veterans Network featured our Hawaiʻi Cohen Clinic team in a blog post for Asian-American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month.

Did you know that 52% the Honolulu Metro area identifies as Asian and 12% as Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander – compared to just 5.9% and 0.2% in the overall U.S. population respectively?

When our Cohen Clinic opened, a kahu (minister, spiritual guardian) performed a traditional Hawaiian blessing, which included the team sharing their mana (energy) and aloha as part of the ceremony.

We're proud to serve our AANHPI community at the Cohen Clinic.

Janet Covington, previously our lead clinician, is our new Clinic Director.
She brings a deep understanding of military culture as the daughter of a retired Army soldier, spouse of a former Airman, and has even more family members in other branches of service.

Clinic Director Janet Covington explains, "Sometimes with Telehealth, there is the perception that you'll be speaking to someone in the mainland. When you call our clinic, you'll speak to a clinician right here in Mililani, who understands our local way of living."
MEMORIAL DAY
During the usual barbecues and celebrations of Memorial Day weekend, the true meaning of the day – honoring friends and loved ones who are no longer with us – is often lost.

Memorial Day looks different because of the pandemic this year, but there are still meaningful ways to honor and remember.

RESOURCES
May is a time to reflect on what each of us is doing to take care of our own mental health. It's both Mental Health Awareness Month and Month of the Military Caregiver.

Prioritizing mental health can be a daily challenge for everyone, and veterans, active duty service members and their families (including caregivers) have additional stressors in their daily lives to navigate. We're sharing self care strategies for military caregivers in our Cohen Veterans Network blog.
To learn skills to manage stress & worry in daily life, check out this free, self-paced course created specifically created for military families by Cohen Veterans Network and Blue Star Families.
