PROJECTS UPDATE
And THAT's Progress!
…check out how we’re doing on our TWO biggest projects:
the redevelopment of Lake Anne Fellowship House and the renovation

Virtual Celebration Success!
High spirits, delectable cocktails and deep gratitude were the major themes of Fellowship Square’s “Cheers to Sixty Years” virtual celebration on December 2, 2020.

CEO Christy Zeitz kicked off the evening with a few remarks on Fellowship Square’s history and plans for the future. The Fellowship Square board’s Vice President, Dan Flavin, recognized two very special individuals for their contributions to the organization: Eddie Byrne – a Fellowship Square board member; and Kathleen Harding – a 35-year employee who now serves as Lake Ridge Fellowship House’s board president.

Fellowship Square debuted a video highlighting its redevelopment projects currently underway. Throughout the night, sommelier Felicia Colbert demonstrated easy-to-make yet festive holiday cocktails and kept participants in a celebratory mood. Thanks to our supporters, it was a successful night with funds raised exceeding expectations.

President Carl Jenkins fittingly closed the night by offering a toast: “Cheers to Sixty Years!”

A MESSAGE FROM VIRGINIA HOUSING
"Perhaps at no other point in history have the comfort and safety of a home been more important for the individual, the family and the community than in 2020. It’s fitting, then, that one of our partner organizations is celebrating its 60th year providing affordable housing options for low-income seniors. We at Virginia Housing would like to congratulate Fellowship Square for its dedication over the years. Such an accomplishment!

"Valuable partnerships like the one we have with Fellowship Square are vital to our mission, which is to provide quality, affordable homeownership to all. Together, we can make a difference!"

Reimagining Holiday Cheer
We had a small respite from the world around us when we gathered virtually for our “Cheers to 60 Years!” anniversary celebration on December 2. While it was reassuring to raise a toast to an organization that’s been doing important work for seniors for 60 years, it’s not hard to forget the world we live in now and how the world has drastically changed in the last nine months.

We know that for each of us, this year’s holiday season will not be like ones we’ve had in the past. For the 800+ residents of our Fellowship Houses, the holidays will be difficult – they won’t have the gatherings, the celebrations, the decorated halls and lobbies, sharing gifts with one another or the spirit of the holiday season that has always been a part of what makes Fellowship House a special place to call home.

Holiday cheer this year will be more subdued – you will have to look for it and cherish what you find. As I remind our family of residents regularly “it’s easy to get down in thinking about what we’re missing,” it’s up to each of us to remind ourselves what we still have to be thankful for – and that we will continue to get through this together.

The Winter months are expected to be hard on seniors living alone. We are doing all we can to stay in touch with them and keep them busy with activities.

How can you help? We have several volunteer opportunities that you can do either at Fellowship House or in the comfort of your own home. We are also looking for activity supplies that can be distributed to residents to help them stay busy inside their home. Everything from crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, art supplies, and reading materials like books, newspapers and magazines (especially in Korean, Chinese, Russian and Farsi). What do you and your family do to stay busy? Do you have hobbies or activities that you enjoy? Chances are one or more Fellowship House residents would enjoy that too – if only they had the supplies and materials needed. Consider what you may be able to donate that will help keep their spirits up through the Winter months – and know that we appreciate every generous donation!

To say “We have had a challenging year” is an understatement for all of us! Fortunately, we have weathered the storm better than some and we are grateful for our good fortune. We look forward to a healthier and happier 2021! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones.

In gratitude,
Christy Zeitz
