BRANDON STRAUSBAUGH - "WHY JUNE IS A 'PREMIUM' MONTH FOR ME"
|
|
|
 |
|
Brandon Strausbaugh, PVI Manager
|
 |
I
t's June. Wow! Can you believe this year is almost half over? As the saying goes, "Time flies when you're having fun." And, yes, we do have fun at PVI! Granted, life is not all fun and games, but our PVI Pledge is "to do everything we can to make your lives Safer, Simpler and more Secure" and we do enjoy helping our customers have less to worry about so they can have more fun, too!
June, inherently, is a fun month! In addition to being the start of summer and all that goes along with that, we also have two very important groups we celebrate this month - Dads and Grads!
First, we celebrated graduation. This year, 254 seniors said good-bye to Valley Center High School as their new journey begins. We have had the pleasure of knowing some of these students since they were little kids, coming into the office with their parents...then insuring them as drivers... and now they're headed off into the world to make their own way full of new experiences. Yes, it's an exciting time for all and we wish them well!
Then, we celebrated Father's Day. I hope yours was extra special!

This year, I had the true

p
leasure of celebrating my first official Father's Day with Landon, who also was a graduate (from 8th grade)
this year. As you can tell, we share a common passion.
Also, as most of you know, I have the privilege of working with my dad in the family business. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to learn the insurance business from the bottom up over the last 12 years, working alongside my dad and I
sincerely appreciate the
opportunity.
Yes, I am a blessed man!
So as we wrap up the first half of 2019, we hope that you can say it's been a fun run, and now with summer here, who's ready for some fun in the sun?!

Fun Facts
about
Father's Day
*
Father's Day officially began in 1910 in Spokane, Washington, when Sonora Dodd proposed it as a way to honor the man who raised her (and her brothers) when her mom died in childbirth. She chose June as it was her dad's birthday month.
* The movement grew for years but didn't gain national-event status until 1924 under President Calvin Coolidge. He said it would "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children" and "impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations."
* The holiday gained traction during World War II, and in 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday of June to be Father's Day.
* In 1972, President Richard Nixon made it a federal holiday
.
We hope you had a fabulous Father's Day!

Memorial Day Memories
Many of our PVI "family" participated in Memorial Day festivities, including the Perpetua family, who shared their memories with us.
First in the ring is Adelle Perpetua, VC Stampede Rodeo Little Miss, whom PVI proudly sponsored!
Brother, Gabriel, also got to "parade" around on his own ride!
As the sweet big sister she is, Adelle gave Gabriel some real important pointers as he gets set to do some Mutton Bustin'! (Key words -
"Hold on!")
(Cowboy) Hats off to these cowpoke cuties!
Thank you to the Perpetua family for sharing their memories with us!
If you have special moments with your family and would like to share them with your PVI family, please email to

Water You Doing this Summer...
If your summer plans include spending time on the water, there are important facts, rules and regulations you should know.
California law requires a person to be 16 years of age or older to legally operate a vessel powered by a motor of 15hp or more, including personal watercraft (with few exceptions).
Additionally, as of January 1, 2019, persons 25 and younger must obtain a "California Boater Card (CBC)."
The age requirement has a 5-year incremental increase yearly through 2025, at which point all
operators regardless of age will be included.
Once issued, the CBC card remains valid for the boat operator's lifetime.
To help insure you have smooth sailing this summer, be sure and check out the free, downloadable
ABCs
of California Boating
booklet.
Also, if you want to "wave" bye-bye to insurance worries when it comes to your vessel(s), be sure and check out our
Boat and Watercraft insurance.
With PVI providing the coverage you need, from bow to stern and everything in between, you'll be free to
cast off your worries and
reel in the fun!

PVI AWARDS FIRST "VAN QUACKENBUSH EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP"
|
PVI was so excited to present our first ever "Van Quackenbush Excellence in Journalism Scholarship" Wednesday, June 5th, at the VCHS Senior Awards Night at the Maxine Theater!
Brandon Strausbaugh and
Phyllis Knight had the pleasure of making the presentation. Please
to hear Brandon's introduction to the award.
The quality of applications we received was outstanding, which made for a difficult decision. Unique to our application criteria was requiring the students submit a brief creative video highlighting themselves including wha
t receiving the scholarship would mean to them, and, boy, were they creative!
In fact, we were so impressed with their videos that we decided to give two Honorable Mentions in addition to the Scholarship, and we were pleased to honor and recognize Audrey Banner (who created "PVI pancakes" in her video) and Ryan Chapp (who incorporated PVI and Valley Center into her video trail walk).

Receiving the "Van Quackenbush Excellence in Journalism Scholarship" for 2019 was John Stolec. John "wowed" us with his community service, his creative kid's book and uniquely incorporating the quotations of Van Quackenbush into his video and application.

|
John Stolec was all smiles after receiving the PVI "Van Quackenbush Excellence in Journalism Scholarship" for 2019.
|
Congratulations John, Audrey and Ryan! Well done!
If the students who applied for this scholarship are indicative of the other VCHS seniors, we can rest assured that our future is in good hands!

PVI'S MARICRUZ AVELAR WAS "ON FIRE"
AT THE WILDFIRE SYMPOSIUM
|
As you know, the PVI Protection Team's passion is the safety of our customers, but we also love extending that passion to our community!
The Symposium was a collaborative effort with several agencies involved in the planning and presentation of this outstanding annual event to help all of us become better pre
pared. (Note: If you missed the Symposium, some PowerPoint presentations are available on the VCFPD website.)
It also was our pleasure to have Maricruz Avelar (above)
represent PVI at the Symposium. In addition to staffing a booth to speak one-on-one with attendees, Maricruz also had the privilege of being one of the speakers. Being a "homegrown" girl, she loved having the opportunity to share about the needs of our community and how PVI has
grown
to meet those needs with the many services and options we provide through the numerous insurance companies with which we are affiliated. Yes, a custom-tailored policy just for you. Now, isn't that something to get
fired up
about?
We are pleased to report that the 2019 Wildfire Symposium was another big success, thanks to the efforts of many, including our very own Maricruz!
|
|
 |
| Phyllis Knight (l) and Diane Wick joined Maricruz for set-up. |
 |
Also, we know that due to all the rain this past winter and spring, our community has virtually exploded with potential "fuel" for wildfires. PVI is pleased to work closely with the VC Fire Department and CAL Fire to share life-saving information as well as monitor and report on live-fire situations in our community, as we recently did during the Pauma Valley Fire by utilizing our
The bottom line is, working together, we can be better prepared to stay fire safe!

VALLEY CENTER'S EARLY HISTORY ON DISPLAY
|
"It was great to get to meet the community. CAN is doing such a great job in getting us all together." - Cheryl Madrigal, Museum Specialist, Wa$xayam Pomki Museum, Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians
We had another great CAN (Community Action Network) meeting on May 16th!
Thank you to Cheryl Madrigal, Museum Specialist, Wa$xayam Pomki Museum,

Winners of the door prizes were Jackie Reyes and James Wrather, pictured with Chamber Board Directors: Bill Trok and Larry McKenzie, Marian Walters (Executive Director) and Brandon S
trausbaugh (Vice President).
The CAN meeting is a valuable resource for our community. Think about it: In addition to hearing a great guest speaker, where else can you get updates at one time in one place like we did at our May meeting from representatives from the following entities:
All of that in addition to enjoying a "Julie Stroh" breakfast and spending time with your friends and neighbors, and even talking a little business if you like! All in the space of an hour and a half and it's free!
Thank you to all our presenters and community members who joined us! It was great seeing you!
We hope you'll join us on June 20th for another great CAN meeting!
Below are are a few more pictures from the meeting...
Brandon Strausbaugh and Cheryl Madrigal share a light moment before the meeting begins.
VC Sheriff's Substation's Sergeant Russ Ryan shares his update as Bill Trok, Larry McKenzie and Tom Stinson (Marie Waldron's office) listen.

ENJOYING A "SENIOR MOMENT" AT VCHS

PVI loves to support our local schools and their activities whenever we can, so we were excited when our Phyllis Knight was able to join other community-minded businesses and individuals who took a couple of days the end of May to "go back to school."
Congratulations to the VCHS Class of 2019 for doing an outstanding job, and we're excited for your future!

We also had another "Birthday Girl" celebration for our Marvelous Maricruz, who celebrated her birthday on Sunday, June 9th, but we were excited to show her a little early birthday love at the office on Friday, June 7th!
Maricruz is known for her big smile and her friendly and positive attitude and those are just two of the many reasons our customers love her! She definitely makes getting the job done look like a
piece of cake!
If you would like to know a little more about this special person who always provides service with a smile, please check out
