SUMMER 2023 NEWSLETTER

Summer has arrived, and with June comes an incredible opportunity to shine a spotlight on our amazing children during Children's Awareness Month! We want to emphasize the importance of raising our kids in safe and loving environments. Studies show that when children are cared for by their closest family members, they grow up healthier and with stronger ties to their communities and culture.

DC Kincare Alliance in the News!

Our work has recently received attention in the Washington Post!

Read these two stories about a relative who asked DC KinCare Alliance for help raising her goddaughter. Our caregiver, Yolanda, came to the rescue of a newborn when the infant’s mother abandoned her in the hospital without giving her a name. The infant was born with cocaine in her system and suffered from a birth injury that could leave her paralyzed if she did not receive physical therapy. Yolanda tried her best to care for the baby but was unable to get a birth certificate issued, which put the child’s medical care at risk. DC KinCare Alliance Executive Director Marla Spindel represented Yolanda in court and with the DC Department of Health to ensure the child received a birth certificate and a name – Justyce!

Kinship Placement Roundtable

On June 9th DC KinCare Alliance participated in the Kinship Placement Roundtable organized by the DC Office of the Ombudsperson for Children. We raised concerns about DC’s Hidden Foster Care practice, which harms children and families. Take a moment to watch this eye-opening video explaining how this unfair and discriminatory practice works:

Relative Caregiver Community Board

Annual Family Fun Day

We had a blast at our 2023 Community Board Family Fun Day on May 20th! It was a fantastic opportunity to come together with our relative caregivers and the children they are protecting. We stand with them and all caregivers who are fighting for a system that treats everyone equally and allows them to safely raise and nurture the children they love.
