In a July 1972 press release, School of Nursing Dean Sr. Rita Marie Bergeron announced the creation of a nine-month post-baccalaureate certificate program in nurse-midwifery education. In the 50 years that followed, the program would achieve remarkable success in providing perinatal care to the D.C. community and advocating for the profession of midwifery.

The U.S. State Department recently announced that 49 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral students and alumni from Georgetown University won Fulbright scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year, making the school the top producer of scholars in the U.S. Among the students helping to push Georgetown to the top was global health major Jessica Livney (NHS’22).

Keith Kowalczyk, MD, has been promoted to academic chair, Georgetown University School of Medicine and named physician executive director, MedStar Washington urology service line and chief of service, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Department of Urology. Kowalczyk has been serving in those roles in an interim capacity since August 2021. He stepped into these roles with vigor and enthusiasm, and quickly demonstrated the skills needed to be effective in clinical and academic leadership.

Café Georgetown Closing Due to Construction

To support the ongoing construction work necessary to open the Medical/Surgical Pavilion later this year, MedStar Georgetown must close Cafe Georgetown on the ground floor of the PHC Building as of March 1 until further notice. Starting March 1, one food truck will be on-site Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. to serve lunch. Food trucks will be located outside in the space between the PHC Building and the Leavey Center. Different food trucks will be on-site each week to offer a variety of food options. Cash and credit cards will be accepted.
