With more demand than supply, we continue to see a market that is bringing high prices. According to our multiple listing service, May 2021 showed the median list price of homes in Flathead County was $499,000, trending up 66.9% year-over-year. The median listing price per square foot was $312. This seems to be the new normal.

Montana State Parks Sees Record Visitation
Mild weather during the first quarter of 2021 contributed to a record number of visitors for Montana State Parks. MSP recorded 393,175 park visitors in the first quarter, a 20.2% increase over 2020 and a 78% increase over the same period in 2019. Of the 40 state parks that were seasonally open during this period, 80% experienced an increase in estimated visitation compared with last year. Day use and camping occupancy are projected to rise across the state during the summer.
“As our parks prepare to welcome people from across our state, the country and the world, we continue to prioritize unparalleled customer service and public safety for our guests and staff,” said Beth Shumate, parks division administrator with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. “Our 55 parks, including seven National Historic Landmarks, truly tell the story of the Treasure State. We look forward to a successful season and hope that our parks create lasting memories for all our visitors.”

Denise's Cooking Corner - Cold Noodle Salad with a Spicy Peanut Sauce |
|
I use Mongolian Fire Oil and Sambal Oelek in the peanut sauce along with sesame oil. It's just perfect on a hot summer evening especially when quaffed with Veuve Clicquot.
INGREDIENTS FOR THE SALAD:
Kosher salt
10 ounces soba noodles
1 medium zucchini or cucumber (about 6 ounces)
5 radishes (about 4 ounces)
1 bell pepper (any color)
1 tablespoon sesame oil
½ cup roasted salted peanuts (about 2 ounces), roughly chopped
2 scallions, trimmed and finely chopped
Handful of cilantro leaves
1 lime, cut into wedges for serving
FOR THE SPICY PEANUT SAUCE:
½ cup smooth peanut butter (not natural)
¼ cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons maple syrup
2 tablespoons lime juice (from 1 lime)
1 tablespoon sesame oil
2 teaspoons chile oil or hot sauce, plus more to taste
1 garlic clove, grated
PREPARATION
Bring a pot of salted water to the boil. Add the soba, stir to prevent sticking, and cook according to package instructions until just tender. Rinse under cold water until the noodles are completely cold. Meanwhile, make the sauce: In a medium bowl, combine the peanut butter, soy sauce, maple syrup, lime juice, sesame oil, chile oil or hot sauce, and garlic. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup water, 1 tablespoon at a time, and whisk until the sauce is a pourable consistency. Taste and add more chile oil or hot sauce as desired; set aside. Cut the zucchini or cucumber and radishes into 1/8-inch thick slices, then cut into thin matchsticks. Slice the peppers into 1/8-inch pieces. Place them all in a large bowl.
Loosen the soba noodles by running them under some water, then allow to drain again. Add them to the vegetables, add the remaining 1 tablespoon sesame oil and toss to combine. When you are ready to serve, drizzle with spicy peanut sauce and top with peanuts, scallions and cilantro. Serve immediately, with lime wedges alongside.

There are over 40 essays in this book, all about nature and the phenomena of the physical world. The author engaged me with her deep thoughts about philosophy, psychology, theology, spiritualism and being moral human beings—all topics I relish. I read this book in small doses and that helped me appreciate the depth of her writing and observations.
Vesper Flights is a book that offers hope. Macdonald writes, "Literature can teach us the qualitative texture of the world. We need to communicate the value of things, so that more of us might fight to save them.”
The author makes it clear that nature is the ultimate teacher. Her humble writing is one of the many things that makes her so likeable. Her voice is clear. Her presence is deeply felt while she allows the natural world to shine. It’s clear to see, in her life as much as in this book, that nature leads.
I felt a strong connection to her words as I looked around at the astounding natural beauty and unique spirit of Montana. Each little piece of nature seemed to grow in importance for me.
