The Office on Aging and Independence (OAI) presents:

Maintaining your Mental Health: One Piece of the Elder Abuse Puzzle

in honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)


According to the World Health Organization, more than 20% of adults aged 60 and over have a mental or neurological disorder. Depression and anxiety can increase the risks of elder abuse among older adults and the perpetrators of abuse. "Maintaining your Mental Health: One Piece of the Elder Abuse Puzzle" on June 14 (the day before WEAAD) will bring together local experts and resources to shed light on the role of mental health in elder abuse and prevention, as well as how to seek interventions. Join the Alzheimer's Latino Community Forum

North Laurel 50+ Center / June 24, 5 p.m. / Register

The Alzheimer's Association strives to reach out to all communities, including the Latino and Spanish-speaking community, advancing health equity through conversations, programs and partnerships. Learn about Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and memory loss in a community-focused listening session. Review the basics of these conditions, services of the Alzheimer’s Association and how to can expand the reach of local programs and services. Bring a friend and share your thoughts about how the Alzheimer’s Association can help more people in your community. This Forum is presented in English with Spanish materials, translation and resources.

Older adults age 50+ are invited to an unforgettable luncheon with fabulous performances by local drag queens and kings, lots of laughter and Bingo! Coordinated by OAI and the LGBTQIA+ Commission, with support from the Office of Human Rights & Equity, the event celebrates Pride month, love, diversity, and community. Dress in rainbow attire and join in the fun with prizes and surprises. Free; seating is limited; register in advance. OAI and U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy encourage older adults to take the 5-for-5 Connection Challenge as a way to build and strengthen your relationships and inspire others to incorporate connection in their daily lives!


Here are three steps to get started:

Step 1: Commit to connect - pick five actions and five days in a row to connect with people in your life.

Step 2: Connect each day for five days - choose one simple action to express gratitude, offer support or ask for help. 

Step 3: Reflect and share - how did connecting make you feel? Let your loved ones know about your experience and invite them to join in! Use #MadeToConnect on social media and share this link.

Join OAI and County Executive Calvin Ball for the ribbon cutting of Howard County's first Age-Friendly Outdoor Fitness Lot. Connect with others and improve your health while enjoying one of Howard County's ADA-accessible parks. Featuring state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment, the outdoor fitness lot adds to the recreational opportunities available at Centennial Park North, and is an important step toward creating a healthy Howard County for all ages and abilities!
