Celebrate Newton Banners

Winning Artists & Installation

Newton Community Pride is excited to announce the installation of the Celebrate Newton Banners public art initiative, designed to bring color and creativity to our village centers, brighten our city and inspire civic pride.

Last week, the Celebrate Newton Banners were installed in Newton Centre, Newtonville, and West Newton on city light poles that have brackets. More banners will be installed along Commonwealth Ave from Auburndale to Chestnut Hill. This public art project involves the installation of 130 banners depicting designs celebrating the culture, history, diversity, values, and beauty of the City of Newton.

The artwork on the banners was created by Newton artists Leah KolidasAdam ProiaSage Widder, and Sarah Tomkins, who were selected by a jury of community leaders. To represent the diversity of our city, each of the banners also includes the word “Celebrate" in the eight most common languages spoken in Newton.

The Celebrate Newton Banners initiative is presented in partnership with the City of Newton Parks, Recreation & Culture Department. Thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, The Village Bank; Gold Sponsors: Mark Development and Honda Village; and Silver Sponsors: Mass General Brigham Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Wegmans, Plaut Mahoney Family, and Fasciano Family.

Beautification

Let’s get ready for spring! Do you have a Green Thumb? If yes, Newton Community Pride needs you! The NCP Beautification Committee seeks volunteers to care for the garden at Newton Centre and a few other locations. For several decades, volunteers have planted bulbs, flowers, and nurtured gardens with the most prominent one at Langley and Centre Streets next to the triangle parking lot.

In a few months, it will be time to remove hundreds of bulbs and plant flowers for the summer. If interested in joining our Beautification Committee click here to learn more and receive notifications.

Sponsor Spotlight

Boston College

As a Jesuit Catholic institution of higher education with a long history and commitment to our host community of Newton, Boston College is proud to

sponsor Newton Community Pride (NCP), as one of our 7 community-based non profit organizations that BC supports through our annual municipal services

contribution to the City.

University students, faculty, and staff contribute to the arts, culture, and creative environment in Newton through music, theater, dance, poetry, and film and we share in NCP’s mission to create a vibrant, diverse, connected community through the arts. This year's WinterFEST collaboration featured a performance by BC student acapella group B.E.A.T.S, (Black Experience In America Through Song), on the Newton Centre village green.

Boston College is committed to the arts and annually hosts the BC Arts Festival held in late April. The three-day celebration features student dance, music, and theater, as well as student, faculty, and staff painting and sculpture exhibits, poetry readings, and lectures. The Boston College McMullen Museum of Art is free to the public and hosts a permanent collection, two special exhibits a year, docent tours, special events, and educational programming for students and families.

Boston College values the importance of the arts as a way to connect and build community. The University looks forward to continuing our support of Newton Community Pride's arts and cultural programming as a 2023 Bronze Level Sponsor.
