ESF to Participate in SUNY Chancellor’s Summer Research Excellence Fund to Provide Undergraduates with Paid Internships

ESF is one of only five SUNY campuses benefiting from the Chancellor’s Summer Research Excellence Fund to provide undergraduates with paid summer internships. This new program will expand access to research opportunities for undergraduate students with financial need, first-generation students, and others who may face barriers to securing research experiences. The SUNY funding will support up to 30 ESF undergraduate students.

A study from Dr. Yaqi You’s group shows carbon nanotube has a greater impact than graphene on the tomato rhizosphere microbiome which had unique responses compared to bulk soil microbes. The study, Differential effects of carbon nanotubes and graphene on the tomato rhizosphere microbiome,” is published in Environmental Science: Nano (Royal Society of Chemistry) as part of the Emerging Investigator series. The You lab in the Department of Environmental Resources Engineering, employs multi-omics, analytical chemistry, and fundamentals of microbiology and environmental engineering to study microbiomes in both natural and engineered systems, with a long-term goal to harness the environmental microbiome for a sustainable food-energy-water nexus.

ESF continues to observe Earth Week with a full slate of exciting events to celebrate our planet and call attention to environmental and social justice issues — all planned by our amazing students!

 

Did you know the city of Syracuse and Onondaga County declared Earth Day to also be ESF Day (Friday, 4/21) with a proclamation in 2020? Be sure to check out the Earth Week schedule so you don’t miss anything!

CNPE Hosts Decolonizing and Indigenizing Environmental Justice Lecture

Dina Gilio-Whitaker will present a public lecture “Decolonizing and Indigenizing Environmental Justice. Gilio-Whitaker (Colville Confederated Tribes) is an award-winning journalist and author of “As Long As Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice from Colonization to Standing Rock” and co-author with Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz of “All the Real Indians Died Off’ and 20 Other Myths About Native Americans.”

Spend your Summer Keeping the Waterways Free of Invasive Species

The ESF-NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) Watercraft Inspection Program is hiring! They are looking to fill four summer positions starting in May. One available lead steward (supervisory) position out of ESF and three watercraft inspection stewards who will be stationed at various water bodies in the field.
