SDF E-Newsletter

Scan Design Foundation

Greetings Line!

Our mission at Scan Design Foundation (SDF) is to strengthen the ties between Denmark and the United States with a focus on environmental sustainability. To deliver on our mission, we are excited to share a series of unique events and programs presented by SDF and our partners, from programming around the NW Trolls: Way of the Bird King exhibition, to green study tours, to a LEGO exhibition coming soon to Seattle. This e-news showcases the variety of upcoming programs that allow us to fulfill our mission. We hope you will join us at some, or all, of these upcoming events!

This month, join us in celebrating Earth Day with one of our beloved Northwest Trolls, Bruun Idun! Danish recycle artist, Thomas Dambo, uses his awe-inspiring troll sculptures to send a message of environmental stewardship while encouraging visitors to explore nature. There's no better way to celebrate Earth Day than with one of our NW Trolls and partaking in the Restoration Event on April 20 organized by Friends of Lincoln Park. Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about various songbirds and waterfowl with volunteers from Birds Connect. Find more about information about these events below.

In honor of Earth Month and the environmental message behind the NW Trolls exhibition this Reading List was produced in partnership with Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District and the Bainbridge Branch of the Kitsap Regional Library. Most books are available through your local public library. Thomas Dambo recently released his fairytale about the trolls in the Way of the Bird King exhibition, which includes the 6 Northwest Trolls. Find local stores that carry Thomas Dambo's books here.

If you visit our Northwest Trolls website, you will see a variety of useful updates. There are now Visitor Guides available with more information about each site. For any unanswered questions, we've also added a detailed FAQ slideshow filled with fun facts about the exhibition. And you can hunt for new virtual caches with the Geocaching app created by Adventure Labs.

In other news, last month our partners at Folio hosted a successful Human Library event in Seattle. Created in Copenhagen in 2000, The Human Library is a place for safe and honest conversations between people, aiming to improve understanding and community across cultural and social differences. On Saturday March 23rd, the Human Library was open at its location in Seattle's Pike Place Market with 10 "Human Books" available for conversations, including a former South Sudan boy soldier, a former penitentiary inmate, a disabled pole dancer, and others.

Our 2024 grant recipients so far also include:

  • The 2024 "Sustainable Transportation: Pedestrian, Bicycle & Public Transport Study Abroad Program in Denmark" by Portland State University. Read about the 2023 program here.

  • Six programs at the University of Washington (UW) College of Built Environments: Architecture Internship program, Urban Design/Landscape Architecture Internship program, Master Travel and Studio programs (Interdisciplinary Ecological Design, Sustainable Architectural Design, and Furniture Design), and a Fellowship program. Read this blog for more about our relationship with UW.

We hope to see you this Spring at one of the programs listed below!

Warm regards / Med venlig hilsen,

Your friends at Scan Design Foundation
