CT Trails Day

Sponsored by Connecticut Forest & Park Association, and held on the first weekend of June every year, it is the largest celebration of trails in the nation. CT Trails Day brings folks together to get outside and appreciate all they can find in their own backyards. All events are free to the public and vary in degrees of difficulty. Quest Scavenger Hunt | All Day

Saturday, June 1st & Sunday, June 2nd


TRHP has four self-guided, family-friendly, adventure-seeking hikes across four different Heritage Sites in New London and Groton! Participants follow a set of clues to different locations at each site to solve a word puzzle and learn about the region’s history and ecology.

Fort Griswold Battlefield

Guided Tours | 11AM-2PM

Saturday, June 1st


This tour will bring you through a historic journey through time, where the echoes of the American Revolution are still heard, and stories of hardship and heroism live on. The parks knowledgeable guides will lead you on a short but lively walk as you explore the lead-up to the battle, the massacre itself, and its aftermath. This tour is mostly flat, though there are some rocks and hills. Wear sturdy shoes. No registration is required and all ages are welcome! Tours begin at 11AM & 1PM.

Lyman Allyn Art Museum

Urban Park-in-Progress Walk | 2PM-3PM

Saturday, June 1st


Walk through the 12 acres of wild and landscaped grounds surrounding the Lyman Allyn Museum and learn about plans to create an urban park that will serve as a cultural and educational resource for New London and its surrounding region. Participants are encouraged to visit the museum following the walk.

Thames River Heritage Park is partnering with Connecticut Sea Grant to bring these Quests to life and allow folks to enjoy a fun self-guided, educational activity while learning about the history and power of the place.


“These quests are a wonderful way to get outside and visit places perhaps you haven’t before, while learning about the rich maritime heritage and history of the Thames River region,” said Nancy Balcom, associate director of Connecticut Sea Grant.


Quests are available to complete all year round! Anyone who submits a photo will be entered into a t-shirt raffle that is pulled in the summer.
