THIS SATURDAY!

Alumni from the Classes of '77 + '78 will be playing hits from the seventies to celebrate alumni and their reunions during Sturgis Falls weekend. The event is free and open to the public with an opportunity to make a donation to support musical education in Cedar Falls Community Schools! Make a donation online now!

The winner of the Sturgis Falls 2024 artwork is Makena Moser, Cedar Heights Elementary second grader. Makena’s artwork reflects the theme of 'Making Memories' with a Polaroid camera capturing a photo with her family. Makena will be honored at the Overman Park Bandshell at the Friday night Opening Ceremonies and will ride in the parade Saturday morning. Her design will be used on the program guide, in various other printed and digital media and printed on Sturgis Falls memorabilia.

Sturgis Falls Program Guide

As we prepare to say goodbye to our educational home of the last seventy years, we invite you to share your experiences through writing. If we receive enough submissions, we plan to curate and sell this volume next school year.

Consider the following:

  • Is there one memory or narrative that best tells the story of your relationship to 1015 Division?
  • Is there one space that you’ve spent the most time to which you’d like to pay homage?
  • Is there one space you’ve wondered about that you want to find the answer to before you leave?
  • What needs to be said to this building? What has it carried through the years? How has it failed? How has it succeeded?

We welcome submissions of all genres: essays, letters, poems, interviews; we just want to hear your stories.

If you need some ideas for how to get started, here are some “Farewell” pieces we are using to spark ideas for students:

  • An Ode to My Cheapest Shoes” by Alyssa Hardy → this piece uses a pair of shoes as a way to reflect on a time period in the writer’s life. Look here for strong narrative, reflection, and a conversational, humorous tone.
  • A Farewell to Readers, with Hope” by Nicholas Kristof → this piece is structured as a series of lessons built around a specific job. Look here for a way to structure a piece around the lessons learned with narrative embedded under each, and a sincere, instructive tone.
  • Goodbye to All That” by Joan Didion → this reflective piece describes the changes a young woman experienced while living in New York City, describing the place along the way. Look here for a way to embed place-related details into a personal reflection, with mini-narratives throughout the piece. This one reads almost like a stream of consciousness, moving between LOTS of different parts of what she thinks about the place.
  • Farewell, My Lovely” by E.B. White (author of Charlotte’s Web!) → this is a piece that says goodbye to a car, Ford’s Model T. Look here for ideas on how to begin and end a piece that is focused on description.
  • Retirement Speech” by Jason Kelce → this is a speech that goes through chronological narratives of a football player’s experiences and changes on the field. Look here for ideas about how to use repetition to structure memories and include description.
