Sophia has been coxing for 3 years with Mercer and was elected as one of the new captains for the Men's varsity team! Congratulations Sophia!
Below are some of the answers Sophia provided to questions about her rowing experience!
Favorite thing about the sport: There is no other feeling in the world quite like the anticipation of a good race. Sitting locked in at the start line, passing a fist bump down, waiting for the starting horn. When I’m racing, I forget about everything else and I just focus on doing my best. I don’t have to worry about results because I trust my teammates, their training, and myself. Racing gives me the opportunity to help my team succeed.
Biggest Achievements in Rowing: I raced the second 2v8 at Nationals and placed 5th in the B final, which was pretty cool. But I think my biggest achievement was becoming one of the first female coxswain captains of the varsity boy's team.
What does rowing mean to you: Rowing means the world to me. It’s taught me what it takes to succeed as an athlete. I can say without a doubt that rowing is a true team sport- on and off the water. I’ve never been part of such a close knit community and I’ve gained so much from it. Cheering on teammates as they finish an erg piece, running stadiums even though I am not athletic in the slightest, and coxing boats through races have all taught me the importance of teamwork.
