In 2021, Mercer Alumnus Julian Thomas won gold at the Plodiv, Bulgaria race course as part of the USA U19 M8+. This year Julian and his teammates took the Silver medal at the U23 World Rowing Championship on the same course in Plovdiv on July 23.

The USA M8+ just missed qualifying for Final A directly from their heat and had to earn their way into the Final through the repechage. After winning the repechage they went on to the A Final and took the silver medal .09 seconds ahead of 3rd place Germany.

The USA Women's 8+, coached by Mercer Junior Almuni Coaches Sarah Trowbridge and Adrienne Martelli, dominated the competition winning the Gold medal in an open water victory.

Julian studies at Dartmouth College.

Coach Sarah Trowbridge is the Women's Head Coach at the University of Oklahoma.

Coach Adrienne Martelli is Associate Head Coach with the University of California, Berkeley women's team.

Mercer Junior to Race at U19 World Rowing Championships

USRowing announced the team roster for the U19 World Rowing Championship to be held August 2-6 in Paris, and Mercer's own Gabrielle Zammit had been named as the coxswain for the Men's 8+.

While common in the USA for a woman to be the coxswain of a men's boat, it was not until 2017 that World Rowing revised its rules to allow this at the World Rowing Championship. Gabrielle is only the third woman to cox a USA U19 Men's 8+ at the World Rowing Championships.

Congratulations Gabrielle! We look forward to watching the team in Paris!

More information about the World Rowing U19 Championships can be found on the World Rowing website.
