DEMARCUS COVINGTON '07

Defensive Coordinator

New England Patriots

Newly appointed defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, DeMarcus Covington, was recently featured in an article in the Boston Globe. Here are a few excerpts from the article: 'He was always ahead of the game: DeMarcus Covington was destined to coach. Now he's leading the Patriots defense' by Christopher Price, Boston Globe on 3/7/2024

Great quotes that every Cavalier should be proud of...

Dad, Carl Covington recalled, 'When he was coming up he was able to comprehend stuff quicker....

He was always ahead of the game'

Riley Barnacastle '07, DeMarcus' teammate at John Carroll and at Samford, remembers, 'There were lots of times I can picture him explaining things to a freshman or a sophomore why the play was structured like it is.' Riley also described the Commons at John Carroll and the three portraits of significant alumni explaining that while "half of the students knew who Archbishop Joseph Marino '71 is and Nobel Prize Winner Eric Wieschaus '65 is, every student knew who Heisman Trophy Winner Pat Sullivan '68 is."

Pat Sullivan '68 coached DeMarcus at Samford. Pat's widowed wife, Jean, spoke of many days in which Pat would come home 'talking about DeMarcus and how proud he was of him.... he believed coaching would be a great fit for DeMarcus'.

Andrew Steele '08, the John Carroll quarterback who had many passes land in DeMarcus's hands explained, 'Just being around him every day and seeing the way he treated people and the respect he had for people and administrators and seeing the respect they had for him was really extraordinary. He was someone I looked up to. He just set an example for 'this is the way you go about doing things.'

After his promotion, DeMarcus said, 'There are only 32 defensive coordinators in the world. I don't take that lightly.'

These are just a few of the quotes in this article on DeMarcus Covington and his roots. You may read the article for a $1 trial subscription to the Boston Globe for 6 months. Click here for details!

From the City of Birmingham Government website:

Stories of some of Birmingham’s unsung sheores are now in a book:

“StrongHer: Women Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges in Birmingham”, by award-winning writer Chanda Temple.

The book, which was released in December 2023, includes stories about more than 150 women who’ve been selected through the years as StrongHer honorees.

There are stories from survivors of cancer, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. There are also stories from entrepreneurs, teachers, performers, and more. But the one thread that ties them all together is how they handled adversity; helped someone else to see a better day; or pitched in to make a difference in Birmingham.

GLENNY BROCK '95

StrongHer Campaign

Featured in the StrongHer Campaign is 1995 graduate Glenny Brock! Glenny and her friend Mia Watkins have created an annual celebration during Mother's Day Weekend that honors mothers that have passed away and gives their daughters a way to come together, not dwelling on the sadness, but remembering them in celebration.

The fifth Dead Mothers Day Brunch will be held at Rojo on May 11 from 11am-2pm. Attendees, if they want, may bring a copy of a photo of their mother, which Brock will lovingly post at Mom’s Basement, a popular neighborhood bar in Birmingham, as a tribute to the women who shaped them. They are also looking at how they can share grief resources with others and spread the concept beyond Birmingham.

Click here for more information about the brunch.

2024 RACE TO END CTE

While playing football at Auburn University, Pat Sullivan '68 and Terry Beasley formed an amazing bond that was never broken. These teammates also shared a devastating disease that ended their lives much too soon. This 5k FUN WALK is honoring the lives of these men, their teammates and all others who have suffered or are currently suffering from head trauma.

Through research conducted by Boston University VA Hospital, the Boston Brain Bank, the Concussion Legacy Foundation, and other organizations we know that repetitive hits to the head or a single hit can damage the brain.

This type of trauma can cause a progressive neurogenerative disease called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is a debilitating disease which affects those with brain trauma as well as their families and loved ones.

Bring the family and join us and the Concussion Legacy Foundation in our efforts to promote awareness and support additional research to diagnose, treat, and one day END CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy)

SATURDAY, APRIL 20, 2024

REGISTRATION: 9:00AM

FUN WALK: 10:00AM

Mr. Plaia and the cast and crew knocked it out of the park with the spring musical production, Freaky Friday: A New Musical, which ran March 15-18 in the John Carroll theatre! Led by seniors Kristen Cleary (who will be headed to Belmont University to continue her acting studies) and Maggie Von Hagel (a veteran in the Theatre Department), the show brought emotion, humor, connection, and a lot of great music to the stage.

A special thank you to Holly Hobb '11, for capturing the beautiful photos of the show!
