ALUMNI ADVENTURES
| |
Jordan Edelheit
India Spring 2012 Alum
"The Driven"...
This past month we got the opportunity to be part of an amazing project that one of our Alumni is currently working on. The idea is this... Spend time exploring the U.S. while meeting people dedicated to make positive change in the world around them.
Guided by a simple set of core guidelines, the team will be on the road through the summer connecting with social change-makers and sharing their discoveries through their website. As the Driven team made their way through Portland this month, several of our Carpe Diem Headquarters staff were invited to share their thoughts and reflections through video interview... If you are interested in finding out more about this project, or just looking for some inspirational wisdom from around the nation; be sure to check out the link below.

HUMAN VS. SMARTPHONE?
| |
In a world of ever changing technology, it is becoming more and more difficult to avoid the realm and influence of the "smartphone". At Carpe Diem we appreciate the value of technology, and also the beauty that can be found by disconnecting from it for a while. Don't be afraid to shut off your phones and plug into reality as much as you possibly can! Get out for a hike, have coffee with a good friend, or stumble upon a new adventure!
...and when you get back... here are a few suggestions of our favorite Apps that might enhance your life just a little bit.
*** Caution: Use your phones with discretion, and remember to connect with reality! ***

From the desk of our new Executive Director!
 | |
Drew Edwards
Executive Director; Carpe Diem Education
|
Four and a half years ago on a whim I found myself applying for my dream job. Taking students around the world on community service based cultural immersion programs indeed turned out to be a dream come true. Since those initial serendipitous conversation back in 2008 my life, my world, and my universe has been irrevocably changed for the better.
My time with Carpe Diem has seen me grow in more ways than I could have imagined. After four amazing trips working with some incredible students and co-leaders, taking me throughout the South Pacific, Asia, and South America, I was pretty addicted to Carpe Diem. It was at that time I stepped into the office to hang up my hiking boots so to speak and learn how to use a computer. Through the extremely different trials and tribulations that came in this new environment I found another path that has helped further my growth and my spirit exponentially. Just as my time as an overseas educator took me around the globe, my time in the office has taken me around the little microcosm of Carpe Diem. Starting as the Latitudes Director, then taking over as the FANZ program director, and moving into the Assistant Directorship gave me the opportunity to see this amazing organization from many angles and through a myriad of lenses.
Now, as my world and my universe continue to expand I could not be more excited to transition into the space created by Ethan Knight - Carpe Diem's founder who has put his body, mind, and soul into making Carpe Diem what it is for the last five years. It is with great humility, excitement, a deeps sense of love, and just a touch of trepidation that I step into his shoes. However, along with a dream team staff all of whom have worked, grown, and lived by my side for the last 5 years, I could not be happier to see where this goes, with all of us together moving forward.
Yours in service and spirit, Drew Edwards

The International Carpe Diem Foundation
is expanding!
In our efforts to provide transformative and educational opportunities to the greatest diversity of students; Carpe Diem created the Carpe Diem International Foundation. The ICDF is a 501.c.3 non-profit organization working with students from low-income families, offering scholarships for international experiential education.
Since 2008, ICDF has supported students from the Portland area to participate in Carpe Diem Semester Programs and share their experiences in their home communities. Building on the success of these scholarships, ICDF is moving from a scholarship granting organization into a full blown operating non-profit with regular programs, staff and increased participants. Our main program is a year-long cohort based program in which students will study at PSU in the fall, travel with Carpe Diem in the spring and intern with Mercy corps in the summer. It is our hope that our new programs will help bridge the crucial gap for students between high school and college by providing engaging experiential learning opportunities and on-going support.
