YOU CAN HELP SAVE CARMEL VALLEY’S ICONIC OAK FORESTS

Our Oaks at Risk: Carmel Valley’s oak trees are critical component of our landscapes and ecosystems. But, these treasured trees are at risk from an invasive pathogen: Sudden Oak Disease.  You can help fight this loss, while enjoying nature at the same time.

How You Can Help: CVA’s Natural and Cultural Heritage Committee urges our members and others to participate in an important citizen-science effort to understand and halt the spread of a deadly disease threatening our iconic oak trees: Sudden Oak Death. You can participate in the annual survey of Carmel Valley’s forests simply by collecting leaf samples that will inform maps of the disease’s spread in our forests. The process is straightforward, and you’ll be given all the training and materials you need. This is a fun and useful project for everyone, including children and students.

Here’s How to Participate:

SOD Project Leader: Kerri Frangioso, kfrangioso@ucdavis.edu (contact for questions)

When: Noon Friday April 26th – Noon Tuesday April 30th

2024 Spring Wildflower Show 🌼

April 20 and 21, 10am-5pm

Carmel Woman's Club

Ninth & San Carlos, Carmel

In Monterey County, a spring Wildflower Show is a more than sixty-year tradition. The first show in 1961, organized by Beatice Howitt and Vern Yadon, was held at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History where two hundred or so specimens were put on display. Since that time the number of specimens in the show grew significantly and the show became the largest wildflower show in the U.S. with 600 to 700-plus plant taxa displayed each year depending upon the rainy season’s weather pattern and road closures.

This year is already considered to be another ‘superbloom’ year. Since Monterey County has the largest flora of any county in California (which has the largest flora of any U.S. state), it probably has a larger flora than many states. Our 2024 Wildflower Show featuring specimens gathered (with appropriate permits) throughout the wilds of Monterey County, always a hot spot of botanical interest and importance, is predicted to be one of the best ever!

Please join us to see specimens of the plants that are blooming this third week of April that enthusiastic California Native Plant Society members have collected, identified, labeled, and prepared for your enjoyment. People to help with questions and books related to native plants will also be available to purchase. (CNPS members receive a discount and yes, you can join at the show.)

The Wildflower Show has no admission fee, although we suggest a $5 donation.

Volunteer Stewardship Day

Sunday, May 5th

10 am to 1 pm

Join Kat Hardisty-Cranstone, Rana Creek preserve manager, and a team of Wildlands rangers to help to steward this remarkable landscape with a French Broom Removal Extravaganza!

Your hard work will be rewarded with a light meal and refreshments and the spectacular springtime sights of Rana Creek.

The invasive French broom plant poses a significant ecological threat along California's Central Coast. Introduced from Europe in the 1800s for erosion control and ornamental purposes, this robust shrub has since spread rapidly, outcompeting native vegetation, altering local ecosystems, and increasing fire risk.

Landscape Webinars

This series of webinars sponsored by Monterey Peninsula Water Management District, California American Water, and Water Awareness Committee help you design, install, and manage your landscape using the Watershed Approach. The result is a gorgeous living space that functions as a healthy mini-watershed: sequestering atmospheric carbon, preventing water and air pollution, restoring the hydration and life of the soil, and attracting essential life into the garden. Making your landscape Watershed Wise is no more expensive or difficult than making any landscape; it just takes a little know-how and practice. In these webinars, you will learn about these four principles:

  1. Build Healthy Living Soil
  2. Capture Rainwater As A Resource
  3. Select Local, Climate-Appropriate Plants
  4. Use Highly Efficient Irrigation Only When Necessary

CERT Training/Operations Coordinator

Monterey, CA

"Prepare as if your life depends upon it, because it does!"

Using a Nationally published FEMA curriculum, CERT educates individuals at the local level about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire \safety, light search and rescue, team organization, triage and disaster

medical operations. Using training learned in the classroom and during

exercises, CERT volunteers can protect their family first, and then others

in their community following a disaster, storm, major fire or other

emergency when professional responders are not immediately available to

help.  CERT members also assist in searches for lost persons, particularly

children.

FROM THE CVA COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE:

The Carmel Valley Voice, the Carmel Valley Association's quarterly publication which is sent by post to all residents in the Carmel Valley Master Plan area, now has its own email address: cvvoice@carmelvalleyassociation.org

Valley residents can now submit comments, photographs, ideas for articles, offers to help or join the committee, etc., directly to the editorial board. We hope this new communication channel will encourage community involvement in important local issues.

Curious About CVA?

Carmel Valley Association is one of the oldest, largest, and most successful community organizations in Monterey County. We are entirely volunteer, with no paid employees. Our mission is to defend the beauty, resources and rural character of our beautiful valley. We do that by working with residents, businesses, and government.

CVA was instrumental in the adoption of the Carmel Valley Master Plan and recently settled a lawsuit with Monterey County regarding traffic measurement and capping future development on very favorable terms for our valley. Our volunteer experts represent Carmel Valley's interest, testifying before governmental bodies concerning development, water, traffic, road signs, and other quality of life issues.

We keep valley residents informed about important issues and events with our weekly email Bulletin, which goes to over 1650 residents, and our quarterly Newsletter, which is mailed to over 7,000 valley addresses.
