CCN CEO Trish Baird & Mayor Mandy Martin Jump Into Action

The Heartfelt Response that Followed the Fire at the Colborne Foodland

A fire was called in on May 24, just before 5 a.m. The Foodland in Colborne was burning down. It would be devastating to the community as it was the only grocery store. Within no time, the residents responded. Offers for rides or to pick up groceries filled social media. Municipal staff jumped in to provide coordination. The reaction was immediate and heartfelt.

Calls went back and forth between Community Care Northumberland (CCN) and Mayor Mandy Martin to organize a bus service to pick up residents at three locations and take them to Cobourg for groceries. CCN's Leiann Peart, Director, Client Services and Bobby-Jo Preston, Manager of Transportation Services, also sprang into action.

In this interview with Robert Washburn's 'Consider This', you will hear the story behind the efforts of the community and organizations to help the residents of Colborne and Cramahe. Mayor Mandy Martin and CCN's CEO Trish Baird tell the story behind the story.

Sceptres Classic Car Club Tribute at Ed's House

On the evening of May 19th, Ed’s House was happy to help facilitate a special tribute to resident Tom Everden.

Members of the Sceptres Classic Car Club thought it would be a good idea to do a "Drive-By Parade" and wave hello to their friend.

Tom started the Sceptres with some friends back in 1961. And 62 years later, with nearly 30 people on hand at Ed’s House with Tom, and close to 50 cars passing through, it was a beautiful tribute to a father, grandfather, husband and friend. (Published with permission from Tom’s family)

Have you Joined Us for Diners Yet?

A Meal, Outing & Great way to Socialize in your Community - Join Us!

Community Care Northumberland’s (CCN's) Diners Program continues across Northumberland - "I would like to see us offer take-out!" Comments Donna Rusaw. A take-out option would allow for friends and family to bring their loved ones a hot meal, even if they can't make it out.

With a focus on helping seniors stay connected, our Community Diners program provides opportunities to share a hot meal and entertainment or health promotion/wellness presentations. Meals include an entrée, beverage and dessert and are prepared in centrally located, community settings, often in partnership with other local groups.

“I enjoy going out to diners once a month. It is a chance to have a good meal and socialize.”

Volunteer Driver Feature

We have so many amazing volunteers here at Community Care Northumberland (CCN). We sat down with Shirley Carscadden, and wanted to spotlight this incredible driver, who has been a CCN Volunteer Driver since 2019.

What got you interested in becoming a volunteer driver?

"After retiring, I felt the need to fill my time with something meaningful, and volunteering as a volunteer driver at CCN seemed like a perfect fit for me."

What did you do before becoming a volunteer with CCN?

"I worked 20 years in an administrative role for the County of Northumberland."

Where is your home town?

"Kendal, outskirts of the Ganaraska forest."

What is your most memorable and rewarding moment?

"Volunteer driving for Community Care Northumberland is incredibly rewarding. All my moments as a volunteer driver are memorable, especially when clients repeatedly request my assistance. That recognition alone is a rewarding experience that affirms the value I bring to their lives."
