Cares of Washington

New Board Chair
We are excited to officially welcome Jason Norlin as our new Board Chair.

Jason has been involved with the Cares board since December of last year. Although only less than a year, Jason has been impressed with the Cares team and the incredible clients.

He enjoyed having the opportunity to meet many people during the first Annual Reception, board meetings and job shadowing in the workplace. "I have witnessed the passion from the job coaches and success stories of our clients," said Jason.

Outside of Cares Jason works for a local software company with a career and focus in customer experience. In his free time he loves to spend time with his wife and two young sons camping, hiking, playing sports and reading. Overall working hard to enjoy life to its fullest.

We look forward to working with Jason!
Thank you to Sasha Philip!
Cares of Washington would like to thank Sasha Philip for her term as Board Chair from 2012 through 2014.

Sasha was instrumental in shepherding Cares of Washington's board through the planning of a major re-organization within Cares in 2013-2014. Her leadership and mediation skills allowed Sasha to lead the board of directors to create a strong, long-term strategic plan that will bring sustainability to Cares over the next 5 years.

Sasha has provided clear and structured thinking throughout her term as the Board Chair and Cares of Washington is a stronger and more effective organization as a result of her leadership.

Thank you, Sasha!

Greetings Friends and Supporters,

The clients and staff at Cares would like to extend a heartfelt thanks for the support you have shown over the first six months of 2014. Though we have just reached the midway point it has already been a great year for the organization and we are looking to take even larger steps in the months to come.

This summer at Cares we have been working hard to grow the number of clients we are able to support. Last year alone we made a lasting difference to over 700 clients!

We have some exciting events planned in our future so be sure to check our website and social media often for the latest updates.

All the best,

Your Cares of WA Team

Staff Spotlight

Meet Sarah Kirby Conway!

Sarah has been an Employment Support Specialist at Cares of Washington since December 2012. Before joining our team she worked in mental health at the Community Psychiatric clinic here in Seattle.

As an Employment Support Specialist Sarah spends her time helping people with developmental disabilities excel at their jobs. She works with clients beginning a new job, helps them to learn new tasks and job skills, and checks in with supervisors frequently to ensure her clients are doing well.

Sarah is also the Cares of Washington job coach for all Microsoft supported employees! As a job coach it is her job to be along the side of her employees to make sure they understand their job duties and become stable within their jobs. She supports them throughout the learning process and does a weekly follow up with both her employee and employer to make sure everything is going well.

For Sarah the most rewarding part of her job is working with her clients and seeing them succeed in their jobs where they in turn feel good about themselves. She loves knowing her clients feel a sense of self satisfaction when they are succeeding at their place of employment

Outside of working Sarah likes to visit her family in Wenatchee and Lake Chelan. She currently lives in Seattle so enjoys places like Green Lake, Alki, Leshi and any place that allows her to swim and lay out in the great summer weather we have been having!

Thanks for sharing and for everything you do at Cares Sarah!

New faces that CARE!
Rachel Locken is our new Administrative Assistant at Cares. Rachel is a Washington native and grew up in Everett. She graduated from UW with a degree in Communications and Sociology and is a die hard Husky fan. She hopes to one day go back and get a Masters in Communication.

In her free time Rachel enjoys spending time with family and friends, going to hot-yoga classes, and trying new restaurants in Seattle. On rainy days she has a guilty pleasure of watching reality television. Rachel is excited to learn everything there is to know about working for a non profit organization!

Welcome to Cares!

Nancy Novak  joined Cares as an Employment Placement Specialist in June. She enjoys the variety of being a job developer, networking with employers, carving positions, and matching clients with the right employer.

Nancy grew up on the Olympic Peninsula where her parents owned and operated a fishing and camping resort. She loved hiking in the woods, looking for agates on Agate Beach and playing in the tide pools. She graduated from Seattle Pacific University majoring in Recreation and went on to work for the Boys and Girls Clubs for nearly 8 years, and most recently was an Athletic Director at the Monroe Boys & Girls Club.

Nancy has lived in Monroe for close to 13 years.  She has two children: David age 20, who attends college and Laura age 17, who will be a senior at Monroe High. For her birthday this year she and her children went river rafting on the Skykomish River with 14 rapids to navigate, it was a blast!

Welcome to the team Nancy!

Our first annual fundraiser was a great success!
