Library News

This week is Media Literacy Week! We celebrated by practicing and understanding concepts related to Access, Analyze, Evaluate, Create, and Act. On Canvas, each student had the opportunity to participate in a discussion after playing a game, watching a video, and learning. Students who participate in at least 3 out of 5 of the discussions will earn the Media Literacy Week Badge on our Incentives Website.

The library also hosted the principles of technology classes to go through research in the design process. They completed a WebQuest with research on various famous bridges, famous bridge failures, and the basic forms, functions and mechanics behind how bridges work! Look out for our October Statistics coming soon- to see how October stacked up against our previous months!

October SEL Lesson: Self Control

Learning Self Control

When you are feeling frustrated and angry, it is important to learn how to control your emotions and develop self-control. Self-control is the ability to regulate your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors to help you reach a goal, or help keep a conversation moving forward. There are three ways to determine your control: your behavior, your words, and your mindset. The only thing in the world you can truly control is yourself. There are so many things in the world you cannot control. You cannot control other people’s behaviors, words, and mindsets. However, learning to control your behavior, words, and mindset drives us to be able to make better choices in our relationships and interpersonal skills.

Go with the Flow

Not everything in life should cause stress or drama. When facing an unexpected challenge, think about how your behavior, words, and mindset can quickly make it worse or even better. For instance, you are getting ready to go out with your friends, and you have a flat tire. Do you overreact and yell mean things and get mad at the people around you because you are now going to be late? Or do you focus on getting the tire fixed, call your friend to tell you will be late, call a friend a friend for a ride, or call for an Uber? In this situation, you get to choose your behavior, words, and mindset. Now, think to yourself how you would handle this unexpected situation. You have a major test for chemistry the next day, and the internet at your house goes out. How can your behavior, words, and mindset help this situation?

One important thing to remember when working on self-control is looking at the bigger picture. Should you really be putting negative energy into the event? Or should you take control of the situation and work towards positive outcomes?

Remember, you can only control your behavior, words, and mindset. With time and practice, you will be able to learn to regulate and alter your responses to avoid undesirable situations.
