Week Five in Tallahassee is officially wrapped! With two sittings in the Senate chamber this week, I was able to vote on legislation that protected my constituents in all areas. Legislation this week included women's health care, inmate welfare, student personal information protection, drones, and the elderly community. I also presented my sponsored bills that supports victims of human trafficking to the Criminal Justice Committee. You can find more information on Week Five at the Capitol below including my sponsored legislation, which is under Presenting Bills on Trust Funds for Human Trafficking Victims.

SB 150 - Public Safety by Senator Jay Collins (R- Hillsborough County) was signed into law on Monday, April 3rd, 2023 by Governor DeSantis. This bill would allow the citizens of Florida to carry a concealed weapon or firearm without needing a weapon or firearm license. After serving on the Broward County Public School Board as the District 5 Representative during the Parkland School Shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School, all I can think about is how this bill would put our children in even more danger. We a living in a time where gun violence is at an all time high. I was against this bill when I voted on it in the Senate, and I am against it now. You can find my statement on SB 150 here.

On Monday, April 3rd, 2023 the Senate floor passed SB 300 - Pregnancy and Parenting Support by Senator Erin Grall (R-Glades, Highlands, Indian River, Okeechobee counties and part of St. Lucie county), an extremely harmful anti-safe-abortion proposal that aims to provide support for pregnant women and parents. This bill hurts women and puts their health at risk, which is why I voted NO. I also released a statement on the passing of SB 300, stating why I voted against it. You can find my statement here.

Presenting Bills on Trust Funds for

Human Trafficking Victims

This week I presented bills SB 338 - Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking/Department of Legal Affairs and SB 340 - Trust Fund Victims of Human Trafficking. SB 338 - Trust Fund for Victims of Human Trafficking establishes what the trust be used for and SB 340 - Trust Fund Victims of Human Trafficking establishes the trust fund itself within the Department of Legal Affairs of the Office of the Attorney General.

The first stop for both bills were the Criminal Justice Committee, which is where I presented the bill and explained their purposes, and they both passed through the committee! Next stop for SB 338 and SB 340 is the Appropriations Committee on Criminal and Civil Justice.

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Tuesday, April 4th, 2023 was the 55th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the fearless leader that spearheaded the Civil Rights Movement of 1954 to 1968. To commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I released a statement and joined the Black Caucus in honoring Dr. King on the Senate floor and took a moment of silence. See my statement below on Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King.
