Sacramento’s Urban Infrastructure, With an Abundance of Trees, Poses Challenges During Storms
CapRadio
Sacramento, known for its green tree-filled urban landscape, faces unique challenges in intense weather, like the recent atmospheric river that swept through Northern California last Sunday. The convergence of high winds with large trees poses significant risks to people and urban infrastructure. In the aftermath of the recent atmospheric river storm, widespread power outages affected some 200,000 Sacramento Municipal Utility District customers. The storm, characterized by heavy rain in the Sacramento Valley, snow at higher elevations and winds reaching up to 65 mph, dealt a significant blow to the region's power infrastructure. Power restoration was complicated by dangerous conditions for utility crews caused by the high winds, falling trees and unsafe road conditions. Read this full article here.

CEC Approves $1.9 Billion Plan to Expand Zero-Emission
Transportation Infrastructure
California Energy Commission
The California Energy Commission (CEC) recently approved a $1.9 billion investment plan that accelerates progress on the state’s electric vehicle (EV) charging and hydrogen refueling goals. These investments will help deploy infrastructure for light, medium, and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) across California, creating the most extensive charging and hydrogen refueling network in the country. The plan details how the CEC’s Clean Transportation Program will spend $1.9 billion in state funding over the next four years, with at least 50 percent targeted to benefit priority populations. The funding is part of the $48 billion dollar California Climate Commitment, which includes more than $10 billion for ZEVs and ZEV infrastructure. The state has also received billions from the Biden-Harris Administration for clean transportation. Read this full article here.

How California has Captured Water from Storms
Office of Governor Gavin Newsom
California is taking advantage of this year’s storms to expand water supplies, building off of last year’s actions to capture stormwater. Last year, the Newsom Administration’s actions resulted in three times more groundwater recharge capacity than would have otherwise occurred. Since 2019, the Governor has allocated $1.6 billion for flood preparedness and response, part of the historic $7.3 billion investment package and to strengthen California’s water resilience. What is California Doing to Capture and Store All the Water From Winter Storms?
CBS News
We all know the saying about saving something for a rainy day, but in California it's about saving the water for a dry day. As the rain and snow continue to hit our region, what is California doing to capture it all? The state is working to recharge the groundwater with what is hitting the surface. "You stop pumping groundwater and you allow the basin to fill up naturally," said Ryan Ojakian, Manager of Government Relations for the Regional Water Authority. Read this full article here.
