Cantor's Pick of the Week

by Arlene Frank

Arum dem Fayer, Yiddish folk song

Shpielberg feat. Svetlana Kundish and Mendy Cahan

A few weeks ago we celebrated Jews of All Hues - Ukraine.  It was a glorious night with Ukrainian speakers, Dmitri and Valentina Dyshlovi, music by the Docenko Brothers (of Ukrainian descent) and some very important pieces in Yiddish reflecting the Jews of Ukraine’s past. Two of the pieces I sang that evening were coup d’oeil settings placing us in dramatic scenarios reflecting precious moments from days gone by.

In just a few months, we “travel” to Romania, after we spirit our way together through Italy and Uruguay.  After an emotionally transformative experience singing in Yiddish for our Jews of Ukraine event, my heart has longed for more. I came across this video from these amazing musicians and felt absolutely transported by it and hope to present it at the Romanian - Jews of All Hues.

Arum dem Fayer/Around the Campfire

Around the campfire, we sing songs

The night is sweet, we don’t get tired

And if the fire goes out

The heavens shine, with their stars

So crown our heads, with flower garlands

Around the fire, we’ll dance happily

Since dance and songs

Are our life

And then in sleep, we spin our dreams

The only thing that I could find about this beautiful song is that it is attributed to folk tradition with its lyricist and composer lost to history.  If one day I find out more, I will share, but sadly, that is all I have.

See you this Friday night, February 2nd, for Jews of All Hues - Italy!  Having had a short conversation with presenter Audrey Nadel just recently, I believe that you are going to be amazed!  Her multi-generational story and her precious legacy books about their story will blow you away.

Grab your passports!

With much love,

Cantor Arlene Frank
