German corrugated board industry sees sales stabilize in Q3

Following a small decline in the first half of the year, sales of Germany's corrugated board industry stabilized on a high level in the third quarter. According to the industry association Verband der Wellpappenindustrie (VDW), its members sold 2.03 billion m² of corrugated board in the period, which was some 32.1 million m² higher than in Q3 2018.

"The negative trend of the first two quarters has come to an end," VDW managing director Oliver Wolfrum said in a statement. He added that the leading economic institutes have lowered their growth forecast for the German economy and that, according to the experts, the country is already in recession. "Our members were able to hold their ground in this difficult environment," Wolfrum noted.

According to him, the VDW members were able to take advantage of the continuing discussion about the use of plastic and the growing demand for alternative packaging solutions. "Circular packaging made from renewable raw material is in vogue," Wolfrum said.

The earnings situation of corrugated board manufacturers in Germany continues to be difficult, though. According to the VDW, average proceeds fell by 2.7% year on year in Q3 and from around Euro 0.58/m² ($0.64/m²) in Q1 to an average of Euro 0.56/m² in Q3.

At the same time, pressure on the cost side persists. "For the year 2019, we expect costs to increase by 3.4% as a result of rising costs for salaries and wages, energy, freight and logistics," Wolfrum said.

Kemira investing $20 million to expand bleaching chemical capacity in South Carolina to meet long-term global pulp demand

Kemira is investing USD 20 million at its Eastover, South Carolina site to increase available sodium chlorate capacity. Sodium chlorate is the main component used in the production of chlorine dioxide (ClO2), which is produced on-site at pulp mills and is the primary bleaching agent for Kraft pulp in the pulp and paper industry.

Construction on the capacity expansion began earlier this year and the new production unit is expected to be operational in early 2020. The construction has contributed to local employment with about 50 sub-contractors working on the Eastover project.

"As global consumption of bleaching chemicals continues to increase, we are excited about this investment in our sodium chlorate capacity in the Americas to ensure our ability to effectively serve our customers globally. This investment not only supports our strategy to grow profitably in pulp & bleaching chemicals, but also overall strengthens our position as a leading chemical supplier for the pulp & paper industry", says Kim Poulsen,  President, Pulp & Paper and Region Head, Americas.
