LaGuardia Nursing Earns Best in State Ranking from Beckers Hospital Review

The Nursing major at LaGuardia is ranked the best nursing program in New York State, according to a list published online by Beckers Hospital Review on July 16. The rankings are based on passage rates on the National Council Licensure Examination-RN (NCLEX-RN) exam from RN-granting schools, including those that grant associate’s, bachelor’s, and direct-entry master’s degrees. In New York State, 101 schools were compared. The Beckers Hospital Review list is based on rankings from RegisteredNursing.com, initially reported in December 2023 and updated on June 12, 2024. Both times, LaGuardia earned the top spot in New York State with 98.51 out of a maximum of 100 points, for students’ NCLEX-RN results over five years.

LaGuardia and Workforce Education Center Host Mental Health Matters in E-Atrium

Mental Health Matters was hosted in the E-Atrium today, July 31 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Originally scheduled as part of this summer's programming on the LaGuardia Community Greenway, the event was moved indoors due to inclement weather. Co-hosted by the Workforce Education Center, Mental Health Matters featured performances from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, an "Ask the Therapist" booth, and more in an effort to promote awareness on the importance of mental and emotional wellness. Additional events scheduled to take place on the Greenway this summer include a Welcome Party on August 27 and another installment of Safe Summer on August 29. For more information about Greenway programming, visit the Greenway's webpage or contact Nayelli Valencia Turrent, Chief of Staff at nvalenciaturrent@lagcc.cuny.edu.

Community Capacity Development Hosts Safe Summer 2024 Event on the LaGuardia Community Greenway

On Thursday, July 25, the LaGuardia community and Community Capacity Development came together for Safe Summer 2024, a community-driven, multi-city effort aimed at preventing gun violence. The event, which took place on the LaGuardia Community Greenway, aimed to promote safety and security by raising awareness of violent crime in the nation. Attendees of last week’s event included President Kenneth Adams and Council Member Julie Won. Community Capacity Development began the Safe Summer initiative in New York back in the summer of 2016, in response to the historical uptick in violent crime during the summer months. Since then, the initiative has expanded to more than two dozen cities across the United States. Another installment of Safe Summer is scheduled to take place on the LaGuardia Community Greenway next month, on August 29.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

LaGuardia Student Invited to Participate in Science New Wave Festival

LaGuardia student Miranda Schrade, an Applied Mathematics major, was recently invited to participate in the 17th Annual Science New Wave Festival. Miranda’s project, "Maritime Forest, Provincelands," has been selected for inclusion and is part of the Labocine's "Scenes from the Forest" initiative. Each year, the festival curates an impressive lineup of 64 works, including documentaries, fiction, animation, video art, data, fieldwork, and creative hybrids that explore the intersections of science and art. “When looking at natural and social environments, video storytelling is a great primary source,” Miranda said she initially encountered Labocine in her search for additional undergraduate research opportunities for her upcoming Massachusetts Institute of Technology transfer application. “’Maritime Forest’ is an immersive view of the Provincelands on the National Seashore,” Miranda says. “Despite its remote location, human presence is still evident in the forest through unseen cars speeding by and people screaming. The project aims to document maritime trees, but the humans and animals who visit them make natural appearances. My goal is to inspire others to appreciate the importance of scientific discovery and inquiry in improving our world.”

Fine Arts Professor Ari Richter Speaks About New Graphic Memoir with New York Times Editor Rachel Dry

On July 25, Professor Ari Richter spoke about his forthcoming graphic memoir, Never Again Will I Visit Auschwitz: A Graphic Family Memoir of Trauma & Inheritance at Books are Magic in Brooklyn Heights. The book weaves together two haunting stories—Richter’s grand- and great-grandparents’ imprisonment in Dachau, Buchenwald, and Auschwitz, and his own awakening to the contemporary rise of authoritarianism and the continuing crisis of anti-Semitism. In conversation with Rachel Dry of The New York Times, Professor Richter presented a few pages of the memoir and answered questions from audience members. Pictured to the left are Professor Richter, Vera Albrecht, Chairperson of the Humanities Department, and President Kenneth Adams with copies of Professor Richter’s memoir. If you missed the event, you can watch a recording on Books are Magic’s YouTube channel.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

IT Update: Mandatory CUNY Cybersecurity Awareness Training Course

CUNY has announced that the 40-minute Cybersecurity Awareness training course, designed specifically for faculty and staff, is now mandatory annually, beginning this year. This course will help safeguard the security of our data against increasing cybersecurity risks, such as phishing attacks, spam, and hacked accounts, while providing best practices for safeguarding your data. You can view the course on Blackboard. All LaGuardia faculty and staff are required to take this course and we encourage you to take it as soon as possible to protect your own and the University's data. If you have any questions regarding the training, please contact Maritza Acero.

Security Alert: Guard Against Increasing Phishing Email Attacks

There has been an increase in phishing attacks directed at CUNY from a variety of Gmail accounts. Most are of the familiar job scam variety which students are prone to acting on. CUNY/CIS teams are working with Microsoft to block these attacks, which are not “spammy” or “phishy” in nature so they aren’t automatically blocked by email security measures. CUNY/CIS urges all to guard against responding to potential phishing emails, as well as to communicate with colleagues and students to generate greater awareness about the scam increase.

Recommended User Actions Include:

  • DO NOT reply to unexpected or unusual emails.
  • DO NOT reply to emails with personal information or passwords.
  • DO NOT click links or open attachments in unsolicited emails.
  • DO read the CUNY Ransomware and Phishing Advisories.
  • DO complete security awareness training at security.cuny.edu

If you suspect you’ve received a suspicious or phishing email, please forward it to spam@lagcc.cuny.edu. Do not forward it to the LAG Information Technology Division or other group distribution lists or employees, including IT personnel. If you already responded to a phishing email, immediately contact our IT HelpDesk by submitting a ticket through the Faculty & Staff Portal or by email at ITHelp@lagcc.cuny.edu, or call 718-482-6134. If you have questions, please contact LaGuardia's Information Security team
