April 10, 2024
A note from the Dean
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

Next Wednesday, April 17, we’ll celebrate our students and their many accomplishments at the annual Awards Ceremony in the Student Center at 5:30 p.m. Throughout the semester, they have flourished in the classroom, served their communities, and grown as individuals. This is a great opportunity to honor their hard work, and I hope to see you there.

I’m looking forward to my first Oxford Farm Plant Sale, and this year there will be a special preview day for faculty and staff. On Friday, April 12, the farm will host a sale open to the entire Oxford community from noon to 5:00 p.m. So, stop by while you’re already on campus; you can even grab a slice of wood-fired pizza while you browse. The annual sale will take place at the farm on Saturday, April 13. You can find more details in a section below.

Last Friday, you may have seen about 120 visitors on campus for our first Admitted Student Preview Day of the month. We’ll have two more (April 13 and 19)—so if you see new faces around the quad, say hello!

Warmly,
Badia

What do you like best about your job and about Oxford?

What is your favorite song/tv show/movie/restaurant/podcast?
My favorite movie is Training Day. I also really like Army of Shadows and Apocalypse Now
What makes you happy or brings you joy?

2024 Class Gift
A message from the 2024 Class Gift Committee:

The Oxford Class of 2024 is commemorating their time here with a meaningful gift in memory of their beloved classmate, Krisha Patel. They plan to install a stained glass window on the second floor of Candler Hall featuring either a lotus flower or a sunflower symbolizing Krisha's spirit. Any extra funds raised will go toward renovating the space for student use. The goal is to create a versatile area for studying, meditating, and meetings. Donations can honor family members, graduating students, professors, or staff. Your support will help leave a legacy and enhance the vibrant campus community at Oxford. Thank you for considering and supporting this endeavor. You can read more and donate here.

Learn & Serve with Georgia Coalition of Higher Education in Prison
This year, Volunteer Oxford (VO) has tried to dive deeper into the aspect of service that utilizes volunteer efforts to advocate for the community in unique ways. In efforts to bring light to the importance of advocacy and research as a component of service, Volunteer Oxford’s Learn & Serve sector worked with the Georgia Coalition of Higher Education in Prison (GACHEP).

The research project, named the Incarcerated Students’ Bill of Rights, seeks to identify barriers for incarcerated students enrolled in a higher education in prison program. To contribute to the preliminary research for this project, VO organized student volunteers to conduct interviews with educators and formerly incarcerated students who have experience working in or attending higher education programs in prisons. The interviews were then transcribed and analyzed for common themes and barriers by GACHEP’s student intern, Oxford College alumna Berkeley Borkert.

For the purpose of raising more awareness about higher education in prison, the role advocacy plays in service/volunteering, and the work that has been done for the Incarcerated Students’ Bill of Rights, VO’s Learn & Serve sector will be hosting an event on April 22 at 6:30 p.m. in Phi Gamma. This event will consist of a panel of GACHEP representatives, educators, and formerly incarcerated students who have experienced higher education in prison in some way. This will give students, faculty, and staff a chance to learn more about the work GACHEP is doing and learn how to dive deeper into advocacy in their own lives.

You can register here.
