The BOCC celebrated the grand re-opening of the Lore Oyster House and 125-year anniversary celebration of the Wm. B. Tennison in Solomons. The Lore Oyster House was opened in 1934 as a seafood packing plant and underwent intense restoration. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2001, the oyster house now also has exhibits exploring all aspects of oyster processing and its role in the Solomons community.

The Wm. B. Tennison, another true maritime treasure, is the oldest wooden United States Coast Guard-certified passenger vessel in the Fifth Coast Guard District and reputedly the second oldest in the United States.

The Department of Parks & Recreation, Natural Resources Division, in partnership with the Calvert Nature Society recently honored Calvert Stewards volunteers for their ongoing service over the last year.

The Calvert Stewards volunteer program offers opportunities for public service in education, research and stewardship, supporting the missions of the Natural Resources Division and the Calvert Nature Society. In 2023, 108 volunteers recorded 5,940 hours. Learn more about our outstanding volunteers!

As temperatures rise, practicing heat safety is the cool thing to do. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and apply sunscreen regularly. Keep an eye on vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly and pets. Knowing the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke can save lives.

Stay cool and stay safe! Find preparedness and safety information for heat and more from the Department of Public Safety.
