Farmer's Daughter
Location: Bowen Farm
1099-1045 Dan Bowen Rd. Prince Frederick, MD
Kathy Bowen chose the "Farmer's Daughter" design because, as she says, "I am one." She and her mother, Mildred Bowen, now 98, are quilters as was her grandmother, Nettie A. Bowen.
The barn is located on Dan Bowen Road which is named for Kathy's grandfather. The barn where the square hangs was built by Kathy's father, James Bowen, who raised grain crops as well as tobacco until his death in 1984. The barn stores the family's now unused tobacco planter as well as being utilized as a carpentry shop for many projects. The tobacco stripping room remains in the basement of the barn.
The land where the barn stands has been in the Bowen family for at least five generations. Currently, Kathy and her son, Jamie Shifflett, operate a cow / calf operation. They are branching out into beekeeping and hope to produce much sought after local honey.
| Are you interested in sponsoring a quilt square? Would you like to find out if your barn, home, or place of business is eligible to display one? Contact the Arts Council for more information! | | |

ArtWorks@7th Presents: Cabin Fever
January 5 -29, 2023
Open House: January 7 at 1:00 PM
Gallery Hours: Thursday - Sunday, 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Hello to a New Year with endless possibilities! Winter days ushered us from frenzied holidays into cold January where gray skies atop leafless trees steal the landscape of warmth and forces us inside day after day - cabin fever has arrived. This visceral need to be among people, the desire to shake off the couch crumbs, the need to take in stimulating scenery is the universe telling you to get up and get out! Listen to your inner artist, take a walk, study the trees’ long limbs, smell the cold air, meet a friend for a hot drink. Come to Artworks@7th and you’ll see works by local artists like “Evening Walk” by Mike Smawley, “Tabby at the Window” by Suzanne Shelden and “Cat Sleeping on the Porch” by Davy Strong and much more to help erase those winter doldrums!
Our featured artist for January is Benita Jenkins. Benita is an enthusiastic new artist eager to share her artistic creations with the community. She paints out of enjoyment and passion and says that painting gives her peace. Come support this aspiring new artist! Her bright colored abstracts will surely brighten your winter day.
Money spent locally stays in the local economy and continues to strengthen the economic base of the entire community. Small local businesses make indispensable contributions to communities and neighborhoods. Supporting local artists allows them the opportunity to continue to serve their communities. You will often see members of Artworks@7th supporting local charities and organizations by participating in art shows, teaching workshops, and donating items for fundraisers.
