Did you know that every day an estimated 5 million, or 1 in 10, older Americans experience elder abuse, neglect or exploitation? June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Older people throughout the United States lose an estimated $2.6 billion or more annually due to elder financial abuse and exploitation. Elder abuse also creates healthcare and legal costs for our society. However, we can help to prevent this. Caregivers can do their part to prevent elder abuse by learning more, so check out the following:

Below are five things everyone can do to prevent elder abuse: 


1) Learn the signs of elder abuse.


2) Prevent isolation. Call or visit your older loved ones and ask how they are doing on a regular basis. 


3) Listen to older adults and their caregivers to understand their challenges and provide support.


4) Prevent caregiver burnout by asking for help by talking to a friend, family member, pastor or mental health counselor. You can also call the Calvert County Office on Aging at 410-535-4606, ext. 8755, to learn more about caregiver supports.



5) Report abuse or suspected abuse to Adult Protective Services by calling 443-550-6969 or 1-800-91-PREVENT. If it is an immediate emergency dial 911.

Signs of emotional and psychological abuse in elders include:


Appearing depressed, withdrawn, or scared


Avoiding eye contact


Different eating or sleeping patterns


Isolation from friends and family


Low self-esteem


Mood swings


Sudden changes in behavior/personality
