Upcoming Funeral Service at Calvary

All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Jay Labarthe

A service to celebrate the life of Jules (Jay) Labarthe, Jr. will be held at Calvary on Saturday, May 25 at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Jay died on March 28, 2024. Please join us in holding Jay and his family and friends in your prayers.

Honoring James Knight

James Knight

James Knight, our faithful sexton of 41 years, died on April 20, 2024 after a lengthy illness. He expressed clearly that he did not want a funeral or memorial service.

To honor his wishes and to grieve and celebrate him as a congregation, we will honor James on Sunday, September 29 (also our patronal feast) after the 11 a.m. service with a party and meal that will include some of his favorites including BBQ and macaroni and cheese.

We encourage and invite you to send and bring in photos of James over the years that will be on display.

If you would like to make a donation in honor of James that is most welcome. We will dedicate a memorial to him that day. Details to be coming. If you would like to write a note to James’ brother (Edward Knight) and/or sister (Toni Harris), please drop them off at the church office. We will forward the cards and notes

to them.

Rest eternal grant to your servant, James, O Lord: And let light perpetual shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Faith Formation Highlights

Last Sunday, we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost and the last day of Faith Formation and CLW of the school year. We discussed the significant events of Pentecost, focusing on the descent of the Holy Spirit, how it gave the apostles courage, and how it continues to influence our lives today.

Later, we headed outdoors and released 1500 bright red ladybugs into our recently planted garden, a reminder of new life and the power of the Holy Spirit to help us spread God’s message of love. As a treat, we enjoyed cake in recognition of the church’s birthday then spent the remainder of the time enjoying the warm spring day--a perfect way to end another great year of Faith Formation!

Parish Life Title
Prayer List Fresh Start

An important part of our life at Calvary is the opportunity to pray by name for people in need. We pray for members of our congregation, our neighbors, and the family and closest friends of our parishioners who are suffering in body, mind, or spirit. The names of these people are printed on the prayer list in the bulletin insert, so that you may pray for these people at home in your personal prayers. As well, we pray for people on the prayer list by name during the prayers of the people on Sundays.

On June 1, in order to keep our prayers current and focused, we will make some adjustments to the prayer list as well as making a fresh start with it. We are asking for your help. If there is someone whose name you would like to have on the prayer list, please give that information to Kim Pieratt (kpieratt@calvarypgh.org) or the Rev. Cameron Soulis (csoulis@calvarypgh.org) before June 1. The renewed list will include only the names which have been sent to us.

Additionally, beginning June 1, those who are ill and suffering will typically remain on the prayer list for three consecutive weeks. Of course, we know and understand that many needs are ongoing. Thus, please contact Kim or Cameron to add a particular name once again.

As well, beginning June 1, we will make a slight change to the names included in the prayers of the people on Sundays. Right now, only those who are in the category of being ill or convalescing are prayed for by name. Those on our prayer list who have long-term illnesses are not prayed for by name on Sundays. We want to change this so that everyone listed on our prayer list is prayed for by name at least once a month. Therefore, when someone is initially added to our prayer list, they will be prayed for by name for three consecutive Sundays. After that, if someone has an ongoing need, they will be prayed for by name one Sunday a month.

We have two goals with these changes. Occasionally, parishioners request that we add a name to the prayer list and forget to let us know when that person has recovered. We want to be sure that we are not praying for the healing of people who are no longer ill. Additionally, we have a number of people with long-term or chronic illnesses who are on our prayer list, for whom we do not currently pray for on Sundays. We would like to incorporate them into the Sunday prayers of the people.

We are hopeful that these modifications will help us to keep our prayers focused and up-to-date. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Cameron.

Yoga

Please join us for an evening of Christ-Centered Yoga in the garden.

Enjoy a spring evening while sharing in joy, grounding, resting and breathing together, so that we might better know God’s love for us.  We will meet on Thursday, June 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Swan Garden for 30 minutes of yoga and journaling.  If it is raining, we’ll be in the Parish Hall.

Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or beach towel, and paper and pen for journaling. Optional items to bring are yoga blocks, and/or a bath or beach towel for your knees, and hips.

Every-body and all-bodies are welcome!

Agape June 7
Capital Campaign

Exciting news! We are just over half-way to our goal of $6,000,000! As of this writing, the Capital Campaign has 101 pledges and one-time gifts totaling $3,053,370.

Over the course of the next few months, we will be contacting all members of the congregation, who have not already pledged or been contacted. This will ensure that everyone knows about the Campaign in detail; how the Campaign’s success will ensure Calvary’s on-going service as a catalyst for a healthy, compassionate and engaged community; and the importance of everyone’s participation, at whatever level possible.

In the meantime, if you want to get information, ask questions, or make your commitment by completing a pledge form, please contact one of us directly.

We look forward eagerly to having you join us as we work together to meet the financial goals needed to preserve, sustain, and share Calvary’s buildings and mission!

Spiritual Reflection –

Kate Bowler

Adult spiritual formation may be described as the step-by-step discovery of God’s presence in our lives and our personal transformation along the way. Calvary’s Spiritual Reflection meetings continue to be a regular and familiar forum for small group sharing and prayer.

For this term we use Kate Bowler’s Good Enough. Bowler is a Duke religion professor best known for her book, Everything Happens for a Reason (and other lies I've loved), written after her Stage IV cancer diagnosis at age 35. Good Enough is a collection of devotionals and prayers "overflowing with grace, good humor and clear-eyed counsel," says one reviewer.

Meetings are held in the Evans Room from 7-8 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday evening of each month. The meetings are hybrid, allowing “in person” conversation while others join remotely using Zoom. Our next meeting date is June 4.

Email Matt Muldoon (mattmuldoon@msn.com) or Sondra Krimmel (sskrimmel@gmail.com) for information or to be added to the email list. Please feel welcome to join us at any time.

Contemplative Prayer

The Contemplative Prayer group meets for silent prayer and reflection, both in person and on Zoom Mondays at 7 p.m. in the Evans Room. For more info and a Zoom invitation, contact Lucy Weingartner at lweingartner20@gmail.com

2024 Sacred Ground Dates Announced

Sacred Ground is part of the Beloved Community Initiative, the Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society.

There will be sessions of Sacred Ground going on at various locations throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh this year. Please encourage friends, family, fellow parishioners and other congregations or faith based groups to participate.

There are some very positive changes to Level 1 based on feedback from the surveys from participants. This will give us time to implement some of the new initiatives (less readings, more up to date articles, more discussion time, and only 8 sessions). We are also adding a "Sacred Ground" Level 2 for those who took Sacred Ground and want a deeper dive into the content, more research and/or more action oriented programming. The level 2 sessions consist of 6 sessions.

New Level 1 Session for Sacred Ground on Tuesdays at St. Thomas Church, Oakmont, at 6 p.m. Dinner will be provided.

New Level 2 Sacred Ground Sessions on Thursdays at St. Thomas Church, Oakmont, at 6 p.m. Dinner will be provided.
