We are grateful for our amazing catechists, Elsa Buehler and Laura Marchl, and for the invaluable help provided by our classroom assistants and CLW helpers, Andrea Casas, Sara Woodside, Mary Lou Southwood, Cindy Clark, and Laura Everhart. We’ve been so blessed to have Sara Woodside as a part of our Faith Formation program. Over the past few years, Sara has helped with numerous projects and activities including the planning and construction of our raised bed gardens, oversight and assistance with the annual Easter Egg Hunt, and meal preparation and delivery for the EECM Shelter. In addition, Sara has played a leading role as Elizabeth in the Christmas Pageant, helped with costumes, and provided guidance for our youngest participants. Her joyful presence as a reader and assistant at Children's Liturgy of the Word has made a lasting impact on all who attend each Sunday. Sara will be heading to Syracuse University in the fall. We are grateful for her leadership and dedication to helping share God’s love with our youngest members. Good luck and God Bless you, Sara--you will be missed!

Join the Acolyte Guild

We are calling everyone ages 5 to 105 to join the acolyte guild! Acolyte service provides valuable assistance to clergy and the congregation throughout our worship. It also gives you a front row seat to our beautiful building and liturgy. Whether you are new to Calvary or a seasoned acolyte, please consider joining this important ministry. It is a fun way for you or your family to meet new people and learn more about worship. For those available, there will be training on Sunday, July 7 at 10 a.m. Other training opportunities will be arranged at your convenience. Please contact the Rev. Cameron Soulis (csoulis@calvarypgh.org) or the acolyte coordinator, Adam Bailey (atfbailey@gmail.com), with your interest!

Bookstore Heading
Episcopopoly

The Bookstore has a wide selection of items to celebrate Father’s Day on June 16 including cards, books, Episcopal themed clothing including belts, hoodies, ties and t-shirts, along with the board game Episcopopoly, a fun way to learn about stewardship. This unlicensed spin off of Hasbro’s Monopoly puts a religious twist on the board game, which places the player in charge of the stewardship of an Episcopalian church. Gift certificates to the Bookstore are also available in any denomination.

The Bookstore is accepting donations for the Annual Used Book Sale including books, CDs, DVDs, video/audio tapes, and vinyl records, however, please no encyclopedias, magazines, or textbooks. Volunteers are needed to sort and organize the book donations prior to and during the sale. To volunteer, please contact Cindy Pepples at lucindapepples@gmail.com. A Preview Party will be held on Friday, August 9 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with an admission donation of $10. Hours of the Used Book Sale will be Saturday, August 10 through Sunday, August 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. All proceeds of the Used Book Sale benefit local educational and literacy organizations.

Book Sale

The Bookstore is open on Sunday from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call the Bookstore at 412-661-0120 ext. 133 (please leave a message) or email at bookstore@calvarypgh.org and we will contact you.

Capital Campaign

Calvary Capital Campaign Summer Challenge!

Have you been invited to participate in the Calvary Campaign yet? Many have been invited and made pledges to the Campaign, but there are many more who have not yet been invited. Don and Mary Lou, as co-chairs of the Campaign, are launching a massive initiative this summer to ensure that every Calvary member can be part of establishing a new legacy for the future of Calvary’s mission.

Beginning in June, on a random basis, everyone who has not yet been invited to participate will receive a personal letter from either Don or Mary Lou, inviting you to meet with them, and possibly the Rector, to learn more about the campaign specifics and the importance of your participation. Everyone is busy with summer plans, so Don and Mary Lou offer different ways to discuss the campaign with them.

1.        Meet as a group at 10 a.m. on a Sunday. You can stay after the 9 o’clock service, or come early for the 11 o’clock service, have coffee and snacks, and have a short group discussion with Don and Mary Lou, and the Rector when possible.

2.        Meet as a group, or as an individual, at a coffee shop or Panera’s, or other convenient spot with Don and/or Mary Lou, and, again, the Rector when possible.

3.        Meet with Don or Mary Lou individually or have a personal phone discussion.

Shortly after letters have been mailed, either Mary Lou or Don will contact you to choose a time, date, and place to meet.  After the meeting, Don and Mary Lou will invite you to participate by completing and returning a campaign pledge card. We can only count completed, signed and returned pledge cards in our totals. Please know that the timing of your pledge payment is up to you. It can be paid immediately or can be paid over 3-5 years based on your own personal circumstances.

Our goal is to invite everyone and to have as the fullest participation in the Campaign possible. The key element is ‘participation’. Everyone has a different financial situation and there is no expectation as to the amount of your pledge (that information is known only to the Campaign Co-ordinator, Sarah Wilson, and to Lynda Kennedy, Director of Finance), but every pledge is critical to our success as a community. While we will also be approaching several Foundations for participation in the Campaign, the commitment of the Calvary community to the Campaign and Calvary’s mission, is measured by the percentage of members who have pledged to the Campaign and is always an important measure for Foundation decisions.

So, the co-chairs are challenging the community this summer! Please accept the challenge, and join us to ensure that everyone has been invited, and has accepted the opportunity, to participate in the legacy we are building to preserve, sustain, and share Calvary’s buildings and mission.

Guide Book & Directory Advertising Opportunity

We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, functions and events plus a complete directory of all members. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please contact Kim in the Church office at 412.661.0120, ext. 111 or by email - kpieratt@calvarypgh.org.

Update Membership Information

Does Calvary have YOUR family membership record correct? Here is your chance to update YOUR record for our annual Guide Book & Directory (if you haven’t already done so). It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record? Do you want your record published? If you have not already informed the Church Office about changes to your record, please let us know now so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct. Please contact Kim in the Church office. Thank you for your help!

Spiritual Reflection –

Kate Bowler

Adult spiritual formation may be described as the step-by-step discovery of God’s presence in our lives and our personal transformation along the way. Calvary’s Spiritual Reflection meetings continue to be a regular and familiar forum for small group sharing and prayer.

For this term we use Kate Bowler’s Good Enough. Bowler is a Duke religion professor best known for her book, Everything Happens for a Reason (and other lies I've loved), written after her Stage IV cancer diagnosis at age 35. Good Enough is a collection of devotionals and prayers "overflowing with grace, good humor and clear-eyed counsel," says one reviewer.

Meetings are held in the Evans Room from 7-8 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday evening of each month. The meetings are hybrid, allowing “in person” conversation while others join remotely using Zoom. Our next meeting dates are June 18, July 2 and 16, and August 6.

Email Matt Muldoon (mattmuldoon@msn.com) or Sondra Krimmel (sskrimmel@gmail.com) for information or to be added to the email list. Please feel welcome to join us at any time.

Contemplative Prayer

The Contemplative Prayer group meets for silent prayer and reflection, both in person and on Zoom Mondays at 7 p.m. in the Evans Room. For more info and a Zoom invitation, contact Lucy Weingartner at lweingartner20@gmail.com

2024 Sacred Ground Dates Announced

Sacred Ground is part of the Beloved Community Initiative, the Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society.

There will be sessions of Sacred Ground going on at various locations throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh this year. Please encourage friends, family, fellow parishioners and other congregations or faith based groups to participate.

There are some very positive changes to Level 1 based on feedback from the surveys from participants. This will give us time to implement some of the new initiatives (less readings, more up to date articles, more discussion time, and only 8 sessions). We are also adding a "Sacred Ground" Level 2 for those who took Sacred Ground and want a deeper dive into the content, more research and/or more action oriented programming. The level 2 sessions consist of 6 sessions.

New Level 1 Session for Sacred Ground on Tuesdays at St. Thomas Church, Oakmont, at 6 p.m. Dinner will be provided.

New Level 2 Sacred Ground Sessions on Thursdays at St. Thomas Church, Oakmont, at 6 p.m. Dinner will be provided.
