Summer Vacation Time
As we enter the summer season, when many parishioners will be leaving town for well-earned vacations, you are reminded to seek out and attend an Episcopal Church at or near your vacation spot. Also, please keep your pledge to Calvary current, if possible by making payment in advance of your departure. The parish expenses are constant even in those months when attendance decreases.

Join the Acolyte Guild
We are calling everyone ages 5 to 105 to join the acolyte guild! Acolyte service provides valuable assistance to clergy and the congregation throughout our worship. It also gives you a front row seat to our beautiful building and liturgy. Whether you are new to Calvary or a seasoned acolyte, please consider joining this important ministry. It is a fun way for you or your family to meet new people and learn more about worship. For those available, there will be training on Sunday, July 7 at 10 a.m. Other training opportunities will be arranged at your convenience. Please contact the Rev. Cameron Soulis (csoulis@calvarypgh.org) or the acolyte coordinator, Adam Bailey (atfbailey@gmail.com), with your interest!

Reminder: Nursery Care, Children’s Liturgy of the Word, and Faith Formation are not offered during the summer months.
See you in September!

Join the Faith Formation Team!
Calvary’s Faith Formation program is made possible through the love and generosity of volunteers who want to share our faith with the young people of our community.
To ensure that our program continues to grow and flourish, we need your help! There are many different ways to become involved.

Please contact Vicki at vrispoli@calvarypgh.org if you want to learn more about ways you can be part of this exciting and rewarding ministry. Thank you!
Community Service Opportunities for Students
Participating in community service can be a requirement for graduation, a prerequisite for scholarships, or an integral part of college applications. At Calvary, students can engage in meaningful activities such as assisting with church events, helping maintain community gardens, or preparing meals for a local shelter. These types of experiences not only fulfill requirements but also foster a sense of responsibility, enhance personal growth, and strengthen community bonds. Please contact Vicki at vrispoli@calvarypgh.org to learn more.

Wonder opens the door to a deeper connection with the divine and allows children to explore the beauty and mystery of the world around them. Click here for ideas on fostering a sense of wonder this summer.
“Nature, God’s great creation, is a profound teacher. We live in a world that is mechanized and virtual, yet we are meant to live in harmony with nature…Here is where wonder begins: looking at the intricacies of a fern leaf, listening to the linnet sing, admiring the magnificence of an oak tree.”
-Sofia Cavalletti, The Religious Potential of the Child.

“Some reasons why we do it…”
In the Capital Campaign’s Case for Support we list some of the many activities, meetings and outreach that are part of our daily life at Calvary. We also outline just a few of the important reasons why we do those.
As we take a short break from focusing on the projects that will be possible with funds from the campaign, and celebrate having crossed the mid-way point in the goal (130 pledges and donations totaling $3,192,030!) we want to share some of the specific reasons that people have so generously contributed to the campaign.
“With gratitude for the people of Calvary” … “For Calvary’s future parishioners” … “In loving memory of James Knight” … “To inspire our church community” … “In celebration of our broad, inclusive community” … “In gratitude for God’s abundant gifts” … “To ensure a lasting future at Calvary for our children, and theirs.”
The Capital Campaign’s Summer Challenge is to ensure that everyone can be part of establishing a new legacy for the future of Calvary’s mission. Please take a few minutes to consider why you will participate, and please answer the calls that will come from a member of our Leadership Team.

A couple of years ago, we posted a volunteer opportunity to deliver our donations of clothing and small household goods to the East End Community Thrift (Thrifty) store located at 5123 Penn Avenue, one block from Aldi’s. Thrifty is an all-volunteer thrift shop which provides quality, low-cost, used clothing and household goods to the surrounding community and is open Tuesday thru Saturday. Your response was terrific and four volunteers stepped up. This meant our donations could be dropped off weekly, and each volunteer had one week per month. Now, we have need again for a couple of volunteers for this important ministry. If you are interested in helping, please contact Kim Pieratt at 412.661.0120 ext. 111 or at kpieratt@calvarypgh.org. Thank you.
The Calvary Community is again sponsoring the Pack to School project for Lincoln Elementary School in Homewood. The program provides much needed school supplies, uniforms and other items for students. The school seeks the following items: basic school supplies such as pencils, crayons, notebooks, scissors, etc.; sanitizers; tissues and school uniforms, ranging in sizes 5 to 18/20. Pants or skirts should be blue. Shirts should be collared, in colors blue or white, and can be either long- or short-sleeved.
A basket for donations is in the Parish Hall. Donations will be taken to the school in late August, right before classes begin. Money donations are also appreciated. Checks can be sent in or dropped off at the church, and should be made out to Calvary Episcopal Church; please add “Pack to School program” in the memo line. To volunteer to help or for more information, contact Kathleen Farrington at farringtonk@me.com.

The calendar page has turned and everyone is thinking summer… picnics and pool parties and vacations to the beach. But don’t forget that after summer comes fall and the annual Calvary Bazaar, which is set for Saturday, November 16.
The Bazaar committee has already had a meeting and is planning the return of all your favorite tables – holiday flowers; handmade goods; linens and boutiques; jewelry, baked goods, and gourmet foods. The silent auction, Attic Treasures and the New to You room will also return. As you clean out your closets, put aside any donations you may have for the cause. Or if you have some spare time, knit some mittens for the Handmade Table or pull out your favorite jelly recipes for the Gourmet Table
For years, Women of Calvary headed up the Bazaar. But this spring the group transitioned to the name Calvary Community, which is open to men and women of the church. Everyone is welcome to be involved in all aspects of the Bazaar – both in its planning and on sale day. New volunteers are always welcome. Contact Kathy Farrington farringtonk@me.com for more information.
The committee is especially looking for volunteers to head up Bazaar publicity and the Baked Goods table. Volunteer/s in charge of publicity are responsible for internal and external PR. They provide information for Calvary’s monthly Agape, the Sunday bulletins and the church’s Friday email. They also post Bazaar info on online resources – free event calendars or neighborhood bulletin boards – and submit press releases to local newspapers and magazines. Anyone interested in helping can contact Kathy Farrington.
Any volunteer/s interested in heading up Baked Goods would be responsible for coordinating donations to the table and setting up the Friday (November 15) before the Bazaar. The Baked Goods chairperson/s would receive baked goods donations on Friday and organize other volunteers to price, plate and label everything for Saturday’s sale. The chairperson/s must also be at the sale early Saturday morning to process donations and stay until all goods are sold. For more information, contact Kathy Farrington.

It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record? Do you want your record published? If you have not already informed the Church Office about changes to your record, please let us know now so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct. Please contact Kim in the Church office. Thank you for your help!

Spiritual Reflection –
Kate Bowler
Adult spiritual formation may be described as the step-by-step discovery of God’s presence in our lives and our personal transformation along the way. Calvary’s Spiritual Reflection meetings continue to be a regular and familiar forum for small group sharing and prayer.
For this term we use Kate Bowler’s Good Enough. Bowler is a Duke religion professor best known for her book, Everything Happens for a Reason (and other lies I've loved), written after her Stage IV cancer diagnosis at age 35. Good Enough is a collection of devotionals and prayers "overflowing with grace, good humor and clear-eyed counsel," says one reviewer.
Meetings are held in the Evans Room from 7-8 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday evening of each month. The meetings are hybrid, allowing “in person” conversation while others join remotely using Zoom. Our next meeting dates are July 16, and August 6.
Email Matt Muldoon (mattmuldoon@msn.com) or Sondra Krimmel (sskrimmel@gmail.com) for information or to be added to the email list. Please feel welcome to join us at any time.

The Contemplative Prayer group meets for silent prayer and reflection, both in person and on Zoom Mondays at 7 p.m. in the Evans Room. For more info and a Zoom invitation, contact Lucy Weingartner at lweingartner20@gmail.com

2024 Sacred Ground Dates
Sacred Ground is part of the Beloved Community Initiative, the Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society.
There will be sessions of Sacred Ground going on at various locations throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh this year. Please encourage friends, family, fellow parishioners and other congregations or faith based groups to participate.
There are some very positive changes to Level 1 based on feedback from the surveys from participants. This will give us time to implement some of the new initiatives (less readings, more up to date articles, more discussion time, and only 8 sessions). We are also adding a "Sacred Ground" Level 2 for those who took Sacred Ground and want a deeper dive into the content, more research and/or more action oriented programming. The level 2 sessions consist of 6 sessions.
New Level 1 Session for Sacred Ground on Tuesdays at St. Thomas Church, Oakmont, at 6 p.m. Dinner will be provided.
New Level 2 Sacred Ground Sessions on Thursdays at St. Thomas Church, Oakmont, at 6 p.m. Dinner will be provided.
