The Weather Cools Down While Electrification Heats Up

While we’re still feeling energized  from showing off our electric trains in public for the first time, there are  plenty more exciting things going on at Caltrain.

This month, we conducted energization testing in Santa Clara and San Jose, setting the stage for future electrified service. We’re also starting a conversation about Clipper Next Generation and potential improvements to our fare structure. And while Giants service is over with the end of the season, we’ve started up Warriors and Sharks service, and are already seeing significant numbers of fans on board.

There’s still lots of work going on across the system, and the start of electrified service continues to grow closer thanks to the hard work of hundreds of men and women committed to this agency. I continue to thank them for their dedication and effort.

Energization Testing Continues in Santa Clara and San Jose

Testing of the overhead electric wires in Santa Clara and San Jose took place over the weekends of October 22-23 and 29-30, with another planned for November 5-6. This is necessary to prepare for electrified service and the activation of the Overhead Catenary System. Similar testing will occur in the future as more track sections are energized and the launch of electrified service draws closer.

On those days, riders planning on taking the first northbound train of the day from Santa Clara, San Jose Diridon or Tamien Stations can take the free VTA bus service to Lawrence Station, where they can board the train.

Public Meetings for Clipper Fare Changes

Caltrain will hold a public meeting on November 9 and a public hearing on November 21 to receive public comment on changes impacting Caltrain’s monthly pass fare product. The proposed monthly pass enables dynamic zones utilization, allowing customers to travel the number of zones purchased throughout Caltrain’s service area at no extra cost. For example, a two-zone pass would be valid for travel between zones 1 and 2, or 2 or 3 for free, and any additional zones traveled above the number of zones purchased would be subject to a zone upgrade charge at tap off and automatically charged to the customer’s Clipper card, offering riders more flexibility.

Thanks to Giants Fans

This season may not have ended the way we wanted it to, but we at Caltrain still feel like winners. This year, our game day attendance was far stronger than it was last year, often doubling previous turnout. Game Day on Caltrain is a boisterous affair, and we were proud to be a small part of the excitement. Thank you to all the fans that rode with us this year, and we look forward to getting you all to the game, from next April until the end of the World Series.

Caltrain the Preferred Choice for Warriors, Sharks Fans

The Golden State Warriors and San Jose Sharks have started their regular seasons, and Caltrain is on hand to make sure that fans of both teams can see all the action first hand. Caltrain’s San Jose Diridon Station is a short walk from the Sharks’ SAP Center, while Warriors fans can either walk from our San Francisco Station or transfer to Muni. We invite fans to check out our service for themselves, and wish both teams the best of luck this season.
