ASMS Presents: The Jo Bonner Leadership Academy!
Dear ASMS Community,

I'm thrilled to announce a new initiative for our school: The Jo Bonner Leadership Academy. As part of our strategic planning process, we identified the opportunity to further equip our student leaders through leadership development and skill training. The Academy will consist of a half-day retreat, four training sessions, and a fall training day. Students who are selected as ASMS Admissions Ambassadors and Residence Hall Peer Advisors for the 2020-2021 school year will have the opportunity to participate and graduate from the Academy.

We are excited about this program because it allows us to fulfill our school's mission more fully. It will also maximize the potential of our students to lead on our campus and ensure our students are more competitive in the college admissions process, and it will provide our students with a strong foundation for future leadership opportunities in college. Additionally, we have named the Academy after our School Board President, Jo Bonner, who is the current Chief of Staff for the Governor of Alabama. Our students will learn about exemplary leadership, and when we think about someone who exhibits excellent leadership, we think about Jo Bonner. We hope that one day our students will use their leadership to transform their community, state, and nation as he has.

We look forward to updating our community as this program unfolds. You can view a brief description of the Leadership Academy here . You can also click to view the position descriptions and selection timeline for Ambassadors and Peer Advisors. Thank you!
John Hoyle, Ph.D.

Good News
National Flight Academy
On Friday, Feb 8, Brenli Pugh and Sam Dunlop attended the National Flight Academy’s Donor Reception and Tour. They were asked to attend so they could relay their experience as attendees of the National Flight Academy’s deployment program last summer. During various parts of the tour, Brenli and Sam spoke about their experience living and working on the 100,000+ square foot virtual aircraft carrier, AMBITION, planning and flying missions, utilizing advanced flight simulators, and state-of-the-art electronics. Gen. Thiessen and other staff of the National Flight Academy, along with the representatives from various sponsoring businesses and organizations who were in attendance spoke very highly of Sam and Brenli and greatly appreciated their presence and insight.

ASMS students are able to attend the National Flight Academy’s summer deployment program via the Brookley STEM Initiative program. Last year 12 ASMS students were chosen and attended the NFA.
National German Exam Results
Congratulations to Ms. Hoequist and her advanced and upper level German students on their National German Exam results!  Beginners will be tested in late April. Similar to last year, her students earned 1st place in Alabama at Level 2 and Level 3, and 10 GOLD medals for ranking higher than 90% of test takers in the nation (90 th  percentile nationally), as well as silver (over 85th percentile) and bronze medals. 5 students are again eligible to apply for the international travel award that Isaac Jones received last year.

View the results here . Please congratulate these excellent students!
Research Info. Graphics
For their final term project, students in Dr. Ortell's Microbiology class developed information graphics similar to what they would pass out at a research conference. Students then gave a presentation on their info. graphic topics as they would if speaking at an actual conference.
Students Serving the Community
Our students recently volunteered at Feeding the Gulf Coast in Theodore, AL.  They sorted and boxed 3,990 pounds of donated food. This will provide nearly 3,325 meals to individuals and families in need. Our school received a warm e-mail of appreciation from the organization commending our students on a job well done!
