WRLA TAKES ON CARBON TAX

Liz Kovach with CityTV News

To Members at Large:

WRLA’s advocacy efforts are on-going, and in particular, we are focusing on both the federal government and the Alberta government.

The Board of Directors agreed to write a letter to the Prime Minister of Canada, urging him to forego the planned carbon tax increase that is set to occur on April 1st. Given the increased cost pressures faced by Canadians, a tax increase at this time will only diminish already limited purchasing power and increase residential construction costs at a time when new homes are desperately needed.

A copy of the letter is underlined above, and we have a request for you, as our members:

Consider signing your name to this letter, for distribution to the Office of the Prime Ministers, cabinet ministers and your local Members of Parliament. We believe that now is the time for a concerted effort across the lumber and building materials sector to highlight how punitive carbon taxes are, and how an increase could not come at a worse time. Here is the proposed letter. You can save a copy and add your signature.

We are also planning our first-ever Alberta Legislative Outreach meetings, slated for April 17th and 18th in Edmonton, following our board meetings. Requests have gone to various ministers’ key personnel, and thus far, we have commitments for meetings with the Minister of Jobs and the Economy, the Minister of Infrastructure, and with senior staff in the Office of the Premier of Alberta. We will keep you updated as we add additional meetings. Following successful such endeavours in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, it is important that we do the same in Alberta, given the presence of our members in that province and their vital contributions to the provincial economy.

We are also developing a vital partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan in relation to the “Let’s Go Build” campaign and will continue our advocacy efforts there as well as with the Government of Manitoba.

To get involved, please contact Liz Kovach @ lkovach@wrla.org or call 204.770.2416

Thank you.
