California Supreme Court made it harder for employers to classify their workers as independent contractors.

To classify someone as an independent contractor, the court said, businesses must show that the worker is free from the control and direction of the employer; performs work that is outside the hirer's core business; and customarily engages in "an independently established trade, occupation or business."
How the California Supreme Court Ruling Will Affect the Fitness Industry

Both fitness professionals and the owners of health clubs, gyms and studios, will be affected by these new guidelines in CA and the ruling is expected to be adopted by other states as well. Whether a worker is classified as an employee or an independent contractor determines which General Liability insurance policy will cover them and who pays for it. Additionally, the ruling will determine how the worker will be covered by Workers Compensation Insurance.
