Operation Green Light for Veterans

Starting Nov. 6, County buildings will be shine green lights to recognize Operation Green Light over Veterans Day, an event promoted by the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO). This national campaign raises awareness around the unique challenges faced by veterans, as well as the resources available for veterans and their families from county, state, and federal programs.

While the County lights its buildings, residents, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to participate by simply changing one light bulb in the home or organization to a green bulb. By shining a green light, we let veterans know they are seen, appreciated, and supported.

Learn more about this program at the NACo website, https://www.naco.org/program/operation-green-light-veterans

Please join us in finding places where you can shine a green light to honor the veterans in our lives.

County Residents Encouraged to Participate in Opioid Survey

The Statewide Opioid Advisory Commission is encouraging communities to request feedback about how to spend the national opioid settlement funds that are being distributed to the state, as well as County governments. To ensure community voices are included in the planning and use of the state's opioid settlement funds, the Opioid Advisory Commission has launched a community impact survey to understand where the general public feels these funds should be spent.

The survey does not ask any personally identifiable information such as name, date of birth, address, or email address. It does ask about your County or Tribal community, general demographic information to understand who is taking the survey, your experience receiving or providing services, and then how you believe funds should be used.

Calhoun County government is also committed to investing our allocated funds in a way that reflects community needs as they relate to substance use, and so we encourage all residents to participate in this survey. To take the survey, visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7P5WJ2N

Calhoun County Planning Commission meeting was held on Monday, Oct. 23. At this meeting, the Commission received notification from Athens Township that their draft master plan was approved for public review, and supported a zoning map amendment in Emmett Charter Township.

An internal Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee meeting was held on Thursday, Nov. 2. The Committee formalized in a new guidelines document responsibilities for leadership roles on the Committee, voting procedures, and term lengths.

From the Calhoun County Road Department

The Calhoun County Road Department released two press releases this week about upcoming work.

Beginning Monday, Nov. 13, the intersection of A Drive N and 15 Mile Rd will become a 4-way stop. This change in traffic patterns was approved in October by the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners to increase safety for drivers. Read the press release.

Additionally, tree operations will begin mid-November by CCRD contractors. Tree removals will take place in specific locations countywide either due to federal aid safety grants or preparation for 2024 construction. The press release and tree projects webpage provide information about where tree removals will take place and the process for removing trees, then debris, then restoring yards.

Follow the Road Department on Facebook for continual updates.
