Jazz Vespers this Sunday evening! |
Vespers is an ancient Christian tradition of Evening Prayer, consisting of psalms, hymns, chants, prayers, and readings from the Scriptures. Today, many different spiritual communities have embraced vespers and will often include contemporary innovations such as congregational singing, readings from a variety of texts, poetry, silent meditation, or contemplation. With Jazz Vespers, an ethos of freedom and conscious choice provides a spiritual opportunity to hold improvisation as a metaphor for what it means to live in community.
Join us at 5:30 PM in Atherton Memorial Chapel as we bring together amazing musicianship (vocalist Rachel Gonzales, guitarist Jim Guss, and bassist Eric Nakamoto) with holy inspiration for a service of prayerful meditation.

Book Study begins next week! | |
When Rabbi Harold Kushner’s three-year-old son was diagnosed with a degenerative disease that meant the boy would only live until his early teens, he was faced with one of life’s most difficult questions: “Why, God?” Years later, Rabbi Kushner wrote this straightforward, elegant contemplation of the doubts and fears that arise when tragedy strikes. In this book, Kushner shares his wisdom as a rabbi, a parent, a reader, and a human being. Often imitated but never superseded, When Bad Things Happen to Good People offers clear thinking and consolation in times of sorrow and challenge.
Join us for a 4-session book study of this classic as we reflect on our lives and on the suffering we see in the world around us. There will be two separate class times offered each week on Tuesdays (6:00-7:30 PM) and Thursdays (10:30-12:00 PM). You are welcome to move between sessions as it works for you.

- Give thanks for the lay members of our church who will lead us in worship this Laity Sunday. We celebrate their gifts and wisdom, and pray for the Holy Spirit to move among us all!
- Pray for God to empower us anew to minister in our own lives – in our homes, workplaces, schools, and wider community. May we be reminded that it is not just our clergy and lay leaders who are called to minister, but all of us!
- Pray for all those who will attend our first Jazz Vespers, that they would be renewed and inspired.

Readers Needed for Worship!
Worship is one of the heartbeats of our church – it is the work of the whole church community in praising God, hearing God's word to us and responding in faith. One way to help each other in our worship is by reading scripture and other parts of our service. It enhances our experience of worship when we can have different faces and voices leading worship.
If you are willing to read in a worship service, please join our pool of readers! Learn more and sign up by clicking HERE.

HAVE SOMETHING TO SHARE?
We welcome relevant news and events to share on the CUC website, e-blast, and/or to post on our bulletin boards. Please submit items to news@centralunionchurch.org by Wednesday to be published in the following days.

Beware of Email Scams!
Scams come in many forms, whether it's someone impersonating a church leader, or a stranger seeming to have a good deal for you on a special product or service. Please be cautious when checking emails! Know that church staff will never ask you to purchase something or give personal information. Often you can identify an email's authenticity by verifying the sender’s email address (CUC staff emails end with @centralunionchurch.org), but it's also possible for scammers to mimic email addresses. So if you receive any strange message at all and are ever in doubt, just delete it, don't reply or click on any links. You may call the church office (808-941-0957) to confirm.
